MODULE 2 (May 17, 2020)
Time Allotment: 3 hours

Learning Objectives:
After completing this module, graduate students should be able to:
1. Discuss the new trends in home economics education;
2. Differentiate education before and the new trends;
3. Manifest skills in dealing with new situations and solve complex problems in the
field through rigorous thinking and independent work.

Topic
New Trends in Home Economics Education
Home Economics in the 21st Century

Introduction
According to Dewey (1990), there is a positive link between education and society
because changes in the education reflect the changes that occur in the societies. In the
present time, the process of globalization and technological advancement has brought a
new educational paradigm shift that calls for a fundamental change in teaching and
learning.
According to Trilling and Fadel (2009), the world today is highly interlinked and
thus requires "a new mix of skills that involve higher levels of knowledge applied skills like
expert thinking and complex communication". The 21st century workforce must possess
contemporary skills particularly digital and thinking skills, communication and social skills.
This is specifically so when the new globalized world that is characterized by frequent,
rapid and unpredictable changes requires a new breed of people who are able to multitask
and have the ability to work in teams.

Leading Innovations Transforming Lives

Thus, it can say that the fourth industrial revolution will affect the roles for which
today’s students will be prepared. This will require educational institutions to produce a
workforce for working in this technologically transformed era. Further, it will also require
the current workforce to upgrade their skills and knowledge to match these newly created
job roles. For this, a revolution in education is essential to enable people worldwide to
harness the opportunities created by the advent of these technologies.

Pre-Assessment
Directions: How would you differentiate education before and education nowadays?
Explain methodically.

Education during the Old Era Education Today

Discussion
Home Economics is a field of study and a profession, situated in the human
sciences that draws from a range of disciplines to achieve optimal and sustainable living
for individuals, families and communities. Its historical origins place Home Economics in
the context of the home and household, and this is extended in the 21st century to include
the wider living environments as we better understand that the capacities, choices and
priorities of individuals and families impact at all levels, ranging from the household, to
the local and also the global (glocal) community. Home Economists are concerned with
the empowerment and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities, and of
facilitating the development of attributes for lifelong learning for paid, unpaid and voluntary

work; and living situations. Home Economics professionals are advocates for individuals,
families and communities.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN LEARNING

Principle 1: Principled Conceptual Knowledge
Learning with understanding is facilitate when new and existing knowledge is
structured around the major concepts and principles of the discipline.
Principle 2: Prior Knowledge
Learners use what they already know to construct new understandings.
Principle 3: Metacognition
Learning is facilitate using metacognitive strategies that identify, monitor, and
regulate cognitive processes.
Principle 4: Differences among Learners
Learners have different strategies, approaches, patterns of abilities, and learning
styles that are a function of the interaction between their heredity and their prior
experiences.
Principle 5: Motivation
A learner’s motivation to learn and sense of self-affects what is learned, how
much is learned, and how much effort will be put into the learning process.
Principle 6: Situated Learning
The practices and activities in which people engage while learning to shape what
is learned.
Principle 7: Learning Communities
Learning is enhance through socially supported interactions.

The way Industrial Revolution 4.0 is transforming the world, technologies like the
Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are affecting major
industries, and in turn, jobs. It can considered similar to the replacement of manual jobs
by machine-handled tasks that occurred as a revolution in the 21st Century. This implies
that Industry 4.0 will not only affect industries but consequently will transform the way
jobs and education will see. This will result in the evolution of education 4.0.

Leading Innovations Transforming Lives

A few trends in this evolution of learning can be:
Accelerate Remote Learning
Education 4.0 will enable learning anytime, anywhere as the e-learning tools and
applications will provide opportunities for remote, self-paced learning. The role of
classrooms will change wherein theoretical knowledge will be impart outside the
classroom while practical or experiential knowledge will be impart face-to-face.

Personalized Learning
Education 4.0 will also enable personalized learning for students depending on
their capabilities. This means that above average students will be challenge with tasks
that are difficult as compared to students who are below average. This implies that there
will be individual learning processes for each student. It will surely have a positive impact
as it will enable students to learn at their pace. This will result in a better understanding
of the concepts and an overall better result. It will also help teachers to identify the
strengths and weaknesses of each student individually and guide them accordingly.

Choice of Education Tools

A part of Education 4.0 will be the technology/devices used by students to gain an
education. While every subject has its own set of knowledge and information that the
students can grasp, the road to attaining this knowledge can vary. This means that the
students will be able to choose the tools and techniques through which they want to
acquire this knowledge. Techniques like blended learning, BYOD (Bring Your Own
Device) and flipped classrooms are a few examples of this.

Project-based Learning
The freelance economy will be rise and will continue to do so. This means that the
students of today will need to adapt to project-based learning and working styles. They
will need to hone their skills and learn how to apply and mold them as per situations.
Thus, students should be acquainted with project-based learning during high school
education. This part of Education 4.0 will teach those organizational skills, time

management skills, and collaborative skills, that they can further use in their academic
careers as well as employment.

Field-specific Experience
As technology integration in specific domains facilitates more efficiency, the
education curriculum will now accommodate more skills that require human knowledge
and personal interaction. This will result in more emphasis on imparting field-specific
knowledge to the students within the existing courses. This means that schools will now
provide more opportunities for students to obtain real-world skills that are relevant to the
prospecting job opportunities. Thus, the school curriculum will now include enhanced
subject knowledge that can help students with their future internships, projects, etc.

Data Analysis
There were times when analysts used to collect and sort data manually – this will
done using computers. Additionally, computers should be use for all kinds of statistical
analysis – describing and analyzing data and predicting future trends. Education 4.0 will
train students to apply theoretical knowledge and use human reasoning to examine the
patterns and predict trends.

Changes in Exam Pattern and Assessment

The current student pattern of rote learning, wherein students blindly memorize the
information given in the curriculum and write down their exams, will not be the trend
anymore. Here, it is essential to understand that a traditional Q&A or subjective writing
examination may not suffice the needs of future talent requirements. This means that the
assessments, as part of Education 4.0, will not be solely base on the current examination
patterns. It can be done by analyzing their learning journey through practical and
experiential learning-based projects or field works.

The impact of technology on the education industry will not only transform the way
it will imparted, but also the way students perceive education. Education 4.0, or the future
of education as many call it, will change the teaching-learning methodologies to make the

students future ready. It is time to witness this change and inculcate it in our lives so that
we can move towards a progressive, intellectual, knowledge-driven and future-ready
world.

Assessment Task:
Directions: Answer the following questions in a comprehensive way.
1. To what extent do instructional materials constitute challenges to the teaching
and learning home economics?
2. What can you say about the new trends of education as well as the New Normal
education? Could it be possible? Why?

After completing this module, TLE 502 graduate students should be able to:
1. Discuss the issues encountered in teaching home economics;
2. Present the simple action research that you did on your own measures.
(Zoom, Google meet, recorded video presentation, etc.)
(Rubrics for assessment depends on the measures used).

Note:
Good day dear graduate students. I do hope that even we are facing this kind of
pandemic; you are still doing well together with your family. I included already modules
4 & 5 here for you to be ready. We have tackled this before, am I correct? Send your
