TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR
HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC STUDY

INTRODUCTION

STERLING & WILSON SOLAR LIMITED (SWSL) has been selected as preferred
an Engineering, Construction and Procurement (EPC) for solar photovoltaic
project at Sudair, Saudi Arabia.

SITE DESCRIPTION

The site is located at Sudair, Saudi Arabia. Coordinates of site is given below.

COORDINATES
Co-ordinate System: WGS 1984 UTM Zone 38N
Projection: Transverse Mercator, Datum: WGS 1984

Doc No: SW-TSP-C-006-Rev_02-Hydro Study Page 2 of 5

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR
HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC STUDY

Marked area contains four plots for solar plant. The scope of this document is to carry
out Hydrological and Hydraulic study for two plots only. Exact location of the plots shall
be informed later.

PROJECT APPRECIATION

The project involves the construction of Module Mounting Structure (Trackers) Area,
Control Room, Switchyard, Security room and Transformer, Inverter Station Area, ESF,
Pooling Station Area, Transmission Tower, Transmision line network, Substation with
basement, Parking area, internal road and trenches etc.

Area of all structures related to Civil, Structural, Archetural, MEP shall be marked in plan
for detailed Hydrological and Hydraulic Study.

The measures and recommendation are to be provided with consideration of Project

design life of solar plant as 25-30 years.

CODES, STANDARDS AND PROCEDURE

All Hydrological and Hydraulic Study shall be carried field as per local regulation and
national survey agency of KSA. The drainage philosophy shall be recommended as per
local guidelines, code, standards and procedure.
Location of rain-gauge stations and its data are collected/ verified from local authoried
agency.
In case of discrepancy between the standards and specification, the more restrictive will
be followed and applied. In any case, Company shall be informed about the situation and
reserves the right to choose the applicable standard. The Bidder shall indicate the rules
and standards considered to be followed on its proposal

SCOPE OF WORK

The objective of this study is to investigate the rain events for Pre-construction and Post-
construction of proposed Solar Plant and to recommend the measures to be taken in
detailed design of the plant. The study should also take into account the global warming
as per local guidelines.
Study and Evaluate whether providing storm water drainage is must or the risk can be
mitigated by raising the structure above the HFL expected.

Scope of work shall include

1 General overview of the physical and hydraulic characteristics of the
Waterways through the site, Hydrological parameters like surface runoff
coefficient, roughness, Manning coefficient, Hydrological Soil type etc.
2 Study and Evaluate whether providing storm water drainage is must or the risk
can be mitigated by raising the structure above the Highest Flood Level (HFL)
expected.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR
HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC STUDY

3 Hydrological study of the project site to arrive the amount of runoff interseceting
the project. Measures like peripheral drainage or embankment required for the
plant.
4 Identify the hydraulic constraints limiting the use of the spaces in the banks
5 Rainfall intensity, Intensity-Duration-Frequency curves (IDF) for design of
internal drainage. Investigate whether natural drainage of runoff can be allowed
without having internal drainage.
6 Pre-construction and Post-constuction inundation plan, Velocity plan, Shear
stress for rain-events 100-years (1%AEP), 50-years (2%AEP), 20-years
(5%AEP) and 10-years (10%AEP).
7 Investigation of suitability of Hydraulic structures at downstream along with
effect of measure to adjacent sites.
8 Recommendation of top of equipment foundations, Manholes, Building Floor
level within the plant.
9 Recommendation/ measures for erosion, sedimentation if required for the site.
10 Typical drainage details with lining recommendation as per local practices.
11 Survey of floods traces and collecting testimonies of local populations relative
to previous floods events.
12 To check the permeability of soil and rock, Lugeon Test for Rocks and Lefranc
Test for soils will be developed. We estimate the following quantities for each
test:
Lugeon test --> 10 units
Lefranc test --> 20 units
The Bidder shall locate all the test to provide optimum data for design and
construction purposes.
13 The information obtained for each watershed to be used in future calculations
are
Watershed Axis Time Qd
(Years) (m/s)

To collect the minimum information of the watershed physical characteristics

Watershed Axis Area Lenght Zi Zf |ΔZ| Slope
(km2) (m) (m) (m) (m) (m/m)

considering
Zi = It is the highest level detected in the limits of the basin. Initial
dimension
Zf = It is the level where the drainage work is located. Final dimension.

|ΔZ| = It is the increase in elevation between Zi and Zf, in absolute values.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION FOR
HYDROLOGICAL AND HYDRAULIC STUDY

The results that must be obtained for the study object of these specifications
are, at least
Watershed Axis Area Lenght |ΔZ| Tc
(km2) (m) (m) (min)

14 The Bidder shall take into account the Geotechnical and topographical studies
to develop the Hydrological and hydraulic study.
15 Photographs shall be taken of all test and singular site events (rivulet, low
areas…). These photographs will be included on the report.

3. Report and Recommendations:

The report and recommendation are to be provided as per local pratices and guidelines
with the project location, project description, study objective, hydrology design criteria,
software used, pre-project water shed characteristics, pre-project hydrology, post project
watershed characteristics, post project hydrology, pre-and post-project peak flow
summary. It shall also consist of flood hazard meaning thereby the inundation limits, flood
depth, flow velocity, post project effect, potential scour and project site mitigation. Pre-
project drainage design, post project drainage design and summary shall also be included
in the report.
Flood depth plans are also to be provided in AutoCad formats.
