Questions:

1. The following data give the numbers of new cars sold by Carpenters Motors Limited during a
20-day sale.
8 5 12 3 9 10 6 12 8 8
4 16 10 11 7 7 3 5 9 11
A. Calculate the values of the three quartiles.
B. Find the value 22nd percentile and interpret it.
C. Prepare a box-and whisker plot (Check for outliers if any).
(3+2+4=9 marks)

2. A company produces batteries. On average, 85% of all batteries produced are good. Each
battery is tested before being dispatched, and the inspector correctly classifies the battery 90%
of the time.
A. What percentage of the batteries will be “classified as good”?
B. What is the probability that a battery is defective given that it was classified as good?
(3+3=6 marks)

3. A teacher-student committee consisting of 4 people is to be formed from 5 teachers and 20

students. Find the probability that the committee will consist of at least one student. (4 marks)

4. A random variable X has the following probability distribution:

x 0 1 3 4 5 6 7

P( X  x ) 0 k 2k 3k k2 2k 2 7k 2  k

A. Find k.

1
B. Evaluate P( X  6).
(3+2=5 marks)

5. The diameter of an electric cable, Say X, is assumed to be continuous random variable with
p.d.f
f ( x)  6 x(1  x), 0  x  1.
A. Show that f ( x) is a p.d.f.
B. Determine a number b such that P( X  b)  P( X  b).
C. Find the mean of X.
(2+4+4=10 marks)

6. A study found that 25% of car owners in Fiji had their cars washed professionally rather than do
it themselves. If 18 car owners are randomly selected, find the probability that at most two
people have their cars washed professionally. (4 marks)

20% of dogs are older than 22.8 years, find the standard deviation. (4 marks)

8. A survey claims that 78% of Fiji households have at least one credit card. Find the probability
that in a random sample of 500 Fiji households, 375 to 385 have at least one credit card.
(4 marks)

longer. Assume that this claim is true. Let p̂ be the proportion in a sample of 100 such ABC
batteries. What is the probability that this sample proportion is within 0.05 of the population
proportion. (4 marks)
