Assignment 2: PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS

1. Derive the recursive formula for a binomial distribution.

2. Six dice are thrown 729 times. Using binomial distribution, how many times at
least three dice would show a 5 or a 6?

3. If the sum of the mean and the variance of a binomial distribution for five trials
is 1.8, find the distribution.

4. A sortie of 20 aero planes is sent on an operational flight. The chances that an


airplane fails to return are 5%. Find the probability that at most 5 planes do not
return.

5. In a bombing action there are 50% chances that any bomb will strike the target.
Two direct hits are required to destroy the target completely. How many
bombs are required to drop to give 99% chance or more to destroy the target
completely?

6. X is a Poisson variable. It is found that probability of 2 is two-third the


probability of 1. Find the probability that X exceeds three.

7. The number of earthquakes in a given month in California is described by a


Poisson distribution. If the average number of earthquakes per month is 0.9,
what is the probability that there will be no earthquakes next month?

8. A manufacture knows that the plumb bob he makes contain on an average 1%


defectives. He packs them in boxes of 100. Considering a Poisson distribution
find the probability that a box will contain three or more faulty plumb bobs.

10.A concrete column is expected to support a stress of 34 MPa. Assuming the


Normal distribution for concrete strength, what is the probability of failure?
The sample mean and standard deviation computed from tests are equal to 40

11.Sacks of cement packed by an automatic loader have an average load of 100


kgs. and standard deviation of 250 gms. Assuming a normal distribution find
the chance of getting a sack weighing less than 99.5kgs. [S.N.V Z area from
Z=0 to Z= 1 is 0.3413, Z area from Z=0 to Z= 2 is 0.4772]
