?
Popular music is usually referred to as “Pop” and covers a wide range of styles and genres.
Pop music is today driven by fashion and current trends/ issues. It can have a short lifespan
whilst others can be timeless. Think about popular music from the past – why do we still
listen to it? What has originally influenced it? Does it have a particular significance?

In many music text books you will see that the 1950’s is accepted as its starting point for pop music,
it’s the same decade that the term Teenager was made popular! However the term “Pop” actually
refers to music that is enjoyed by the masses, in this sense it can be linked to popular songs from the
Victorian Era sung in the Old Time Music Halls….
Music hall was popular in the UK from the
1850s. The term comes from the venue
where the music would have been performed.
This was similar to the American Vaudeville.
Rousing songs and comic acts would be
performed. In the UK Vaudeville was very much
linked to the working class whilst, in the USA, the
term would have been Burlesque.

Listen to the tracks shown above you may be surprised by how many you actually
know! Think about “It’s a Long way…” why would this song have been important?

_______________________________________________________________________________

As you develop your musical knowledge, you will see that Popular Music tends to borrow ideas from
a wide range of musical styles, trends and genres. This is how new styles are created!
In particular Dance, Latin, Country, Jazz, Blues & Folk.

Popular music styles are ever evolving and alongside the development of music technology it will
definitely be exciting to see where we’ll be going next..

What is clear to see is the link between the development of recording formats and the development
of musical styles and compositions.
