Barriers to Critical Thinking

As stated according to the article by Denis Korn which is the “Barriers to Critical Thinking”

(2011). Two of the barriers that most strongly influence my critical thinking are: poor reading

and comprehension skills and poor or dysfunctional communication skills.

1. Poor reading and comprehension skills

- A learning disability in reading comprehension affects the learner's ability to

understand the meaning of words and passages. ( Logsdon, verywellfamily.com, 2019)

which is one of the common barriers or hindrances of the people or readers that wants

to pursue the ability to think critically, personally this barrier is kind of taking me

away for me to think critically and that it doesn’t help me at all especially in

understanding what is written on the books that I’ve read and it causes implications

on my objectives as a student. In the past I always became shy and timid when the

professor questions me based on my understanding to the book that we are assigned

to read and it can caught you off guard since your brain is not functioning or focused

on the words that came from the book, your brain is functioning on thinking how I

should get out of this situation and being shallow or superficial at the same time. It

prevents you to think carefully and analyze things which engages you to trigger

uncertainty and not to make sure of yourself which indicates that you will lose your

confidence in understanding what you read.

2. Poor or dysfunctional communication skills.

- According to (Shuler, theshulergroupllc.com, 2018) “is a pattern of speaking and

interacting that shuts down true connection, inhibits forward action, becomes energy

draining, it lowers self-esteem, and can affect the overall health and well-being of a
relationship”. Just like lacking in reading comprehension, it takes you away on the

needs of the reader or a speaker to think critically which is obviously the most vital

role in understanding what you have read or seen, understanding what you say and

lastly understanding what other people says. In my opinion I chose this because I

experience this kind of hindrance when it comes to interpreting myself sometimes,

especially in the school. It is the partner of the disability of comprehensive reading

wherein you became timid and dysfunctional on the words you spit, it will give you a

hard time to think carefully since you don’t want yourself to be caught isolated when

the professor asks you the questions, you became speechless and not knowing you

will experience a certain numbness in your body that disables you to speak which is

one of the barrier that really affects a lot of people and that includes me where it also

comes to public speaking or to share your thoughts on an argument or in a oral

recitations that is held in our schools and universities.

Conclusion:

- If I find that these two barriers are the most effective when it comes to disabling you

to think critically, then, I think these means that I have to improve and to be confident

to myself in order to understand what I’ve observed all around our surroundings and

to be more analytical at all times since it is very important for us to think critically at

all times, we must know the risks behind all of our decisions in life whether if it’s

used professionally in our workspace or in our schools or socially within the

environment and other community. Therefore I conclude that Critical Thinking is a

quintessential aspect in understanding all the things that needs to be interpreted by

yourself and towards the society in order to have a better view and interpretation in

our reality.
