An Oakland family is still learning details about an officer-involved shooting that killed their son late
Saturday night in the 9600 block of Cherry Street near 96th Avenue.

The shooting comes as several Oakland communities are protesting police violence after the death
of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

A caravan of protesters passed through the neighborhood where 23-year-old Erik Salgado was shot
during a vehicle pursuit that ended less than a block from his mother’s house.

Neighbors and friends describe a chaotic scene with dozens of shots fired.

“They kept yelling for him to turn off the car, but he was dead,” said a neighbor. “And then the poor
girl kept screaming.”

According to a police source, investigators believe the Doge Challenger Salgado was driving is one
of 72 cars that were recently stolen from a San Leandro Dodge dealership last weekend when
looting broke out across the Bay Area.

Salgado’s step-dad, Fahid Majail, wants to know why police didn’t just arrest him.

“What I want to know is why they had to take him out, why they had to use 46 shots, why they
couldn’t pull him out and arrest him,” Majail said.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the California Highway Patrol was conducting a
criminal investigation in the neighborhood.

Law enforcement officials have released few details in the case but say that more information may
be released Monday.

Oakland police, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the CHP are all conducting
independent investigations.
