1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to:

1.1 Provide a system and instructions, and to assign responsibilities for

preparing the Chemical solutions in the Water treatment RO plant.

1.2 Define safe practices to handle the chemicals properly while using them.

2. SCOPE

This instruction covers the receiving and handling of chemicals used in solution
preparation at RO plant. This procedure is primarily applicable to Chemical Section of
Quaid e Azam thermal power plant, Bhikki.

This procedure outlines preparation and dosing of the following areas:

 HCl solution preparation and dosing.

 NaOH solution preparation and dosing.
 Antiscalant solution preparation and dosing.
 Bactericide solution preparation and dosing.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1. Plant Manager

Plant Manager ensures that proper solution preparation is carried out by the
Chemical Section according to OEM procedure.

3.2. Lead Chemist

Organizing all chemicals required to prepare the solutions.

Maintaining records of chemical consumed.
Ensuring that solution preparation is carried out correctly and according to
procedure.
3.3. Assistant Chemist
Responsible for preparing solutions correctly and according to procedure.
Assistant lab chemist/Helper will perform the activities.

3.4. Department heads

Maintenance Department Heads will manage to maintain the tanks and pumps
as per PM schedule.

CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT

RO CHEMICAL DOSING AND PREPARATION

Document Code: HEI-IMS-CHEM-SOP03 Page: 5 of 6

4.1. Pre-requisites for chemical solution preparation and dosing.

 Wear all personal protective equipments (PPEs) like; Gloves, safety shoes, Face
shield, Gas mask, safety helmet with chin, Goggles, ear muff etc.

 The ventilation system of solution preparation room is in working condition.

4.2. Preparation of HCL solution and dosing to RO system:

 Open the filling valve of tank # 1 and ensure that filling valve of tank # 2 should
be in close position.
 Insert transfer pump in cane of water and start the pump and ensure that pump
will take suction.
 After adding water in tank # 1 then add HCl with same pump and make sure the
ratio of HCL and water should be 1:1 respectively.
 After completion of work close the filling valve of tank # 1.
 Same procedure will adopt with tank # 2 for preparation of solution.
Note: after completing acid dosing in tank rinse the pump and pipe with water.

Dosing of HCL solution to RO system

 Pump will dose HCL solution in suction line of feed water 1 st pass RO High
pressure pump.
 If pH is greater than 7.1, than dosing of HCL solution is done to maintain the pH.
pH of 7 – 7.1 in feed water is to be maintained.

4.3. Preparation of NaOH solution and dosing to RO system:

 Open the filling valve of tank # 1 and ensure that filling valve of tank # 2 should
be in close position.
 Insert transfer pump in cane of NAOH and start the pump and ensure that pump
will take suction.
 After adding NAOH in tank # 1 then add water with same pump and make sure
the ratio of NAOH and water should be 1:1 respectively.
 After completion of work close the filling valve of tank # 1.
 Same procedure will adopt with tank # 2 for preparation of solution.
Dosing of NaOH solution to RO system

 Pump will dose NaOH solution in feed water suction line of 2 nd pass RO High
pressure pump
 If pH is less than 8 dosing of NaOH solution is done to maintain the pH.
 pH of 8–8.1 in feed water is to be maintained.

4.4. Preparation of Antiscalant solution and dosing to RO system

.
 Insert outlet of flexible pipe of transfer pump in dosing tank and insert pump in
antiscalant cane.
 Start pump at normal speed and make sure pump will take suction.
 After filling the antiscalant, insert transfer pump in 25 lit Demin water cane for

flushing pipe line.

Dosing of Antiscalant to RO system

 Dosing Pump will dose antiscalant continuously in suction line of 1 st pass RO

High pressure pump separately in every unit at the rate of 1.25 lit/h.

4.5. Preparation of Bactericide solution and dosing to RO system

 Insert outlet of flexible pipe of transfer pump in dosing tank and insert pump in
Bactericide cane.
 Start pump at normal speed and make sure pump will take suction.
 After filling the bactericide, insert transfer pump in 25 lit Demin water cane for
flushing pipe line.

Dosing of Bactericide to RO system

 During flushing Pump will dose Bactericide in feed water suction line of 1 st pass
and 2nd pass RO for 10 minutes in every month.
