Assessment Report for Letter Naming Fluency

Child’s Name: (Jane Doe) Grade: Kindergarten Date: (NA)

Name of Assessment: Letter Naming Fluency Assessment
Reason for giving the assessment: Literacy development is founded on the mastery of letter
knowledge and preparation for phonological awareness. This assessment was given to determine
what letters are known with automaticity and which letters still need to have focused instruction.

Summary of strengths: Jane cheerfully participated in the assessment and put forth her best
effort to read the list of letters. Out of the 40 letters that she attempted within her one minute
reading, she correctly identified 32 with automaticity. Out of the 23 upper case letters within her
one minute reading, she correctly identified 21 with automaticity. This indicates a high fluency
with her upper case letters. Out of the 17 lower case letters within her one minute reading, she
correctly identified 10 with automaticity

Summary of areas to work on: Jane made typical letter reversals in identifying the p for q,
identifying the b for d, identifying the s for z, and identifying the d for b. Other mistakes are
common in confusing the /j/ sound at the beginning of j for the letter g. Also confusing the
number 1 for the letter l. There was also confusion for the upper case letters at the end of the
alphabet- sometimes getting it accurate and sometimes guessing it wrong.

Instructional Recommendations: I recommend the following strategies to reinforce and assist

in Jane’s literacy development.
*Give guided practice on the letters that she may be struggling with – Teach it to her,
have her do it with you, then allow her to do it herself. Do the same with writing the letters
*Have Jane create an alphabet train or rainbow type arch by putting the letters in
alphabetical order. You can have Upper case letters on top with lower case letters underneath.
*Go on a picture or word hunt, especially the letters that she struggled with. Emphasize
the shape and sound as you locate the item.
*Do a letter sort between letters whose sound is at the beginning of the name and the
letters whose sound is at the end of the name. Notice the letters that don’t fit either category.
*Play a matching game like concentration to match the upper and lower case letters.
