Introduction
This book contains advice and guidance for teachers and parents who have children approaching the
the end of Year 1. A practice test, 2012's test and 2013's test are included. Each test contains 40 words
can use to familiarise children with the way in which words are presented in the phonics screening ch
schools during the month of June every year.
What is the UK Phonics Screening Check?
The phonics screening check is a test undertaken in UK schools to check your child's phonics know
confirm whether your child has made the expected progress during Year 1. The phonics screening che
month of June for children who are reaching the end of Year 1.

How does the check work?

Your child will sit with a teacher that they know and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. Your child
words before, while others will be completely new. The check normally takes a few minutes to complet
If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check.
What are 'non-words'?
The check will contain a mix of real words and 'non-words' (or 'nonsense words'). Your child will be
there will be non-words that they will not have seen before. Many children will be familiar with this be
use 'non-words' when they teach phonics.
Non-words are important to include because these words are new to all children. Children cannot re
their memory of vocabulary; they have to use their decoding skills.

After the check

Your school should tell you about your child's progress and how they have done in the screening check

Structure of the Screening Check
The screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a

Scoring the check

For each word record whether a child reads the word correctly or not bearing in mind the following po
teachers will follow in a phonics screening check):
1. If a child makes an incorrect attempt and then corrects themselves, this should be marked correct
ability to decode. However, children should not be prompted to have another go. If a child makes seve
final attempt should be scored even if this is incorrect and a previous attempt had been correct.
2. Do not indicate whether a child had decoded a word correctly or incorrectly during the administra
but offer encouragement or support to ensure they remain focused on the task.
4. Children may 'sound out' the phonemes (c-a-t) before blending but do not have to. If a child sounds
not blend the word, they must not be prompted to do so.
5. Children may elongate phonemes (cccat) as long as they are blended to form the word. However, if c
phonemes and do not blend them, this must be scored as incorrect.
6. Alternate pronunciations must be considered when deciding whether a response is correct. For
grapheme-phoneme correspondences should not be marked correct (for example, reading 'blow' to rhy
However, alternate pronunciations of graphemes will be allowed in pseudo-words.
7. A child's accent should be taken into account when deciding whether a response is acceptable.
8. Any pronunciation difficulties for a child should be taken into account when deciding whether a
example a child who is unable to form the 'th' sound and instead says 'fw' should have this scored correc
Marking the Check
Children who score between 32 & 40 marks have met the expected standard in phonic decoding. Child
31 marks have not met the expected standard in phonic decoding. Only around 10% of Year 1 pupils sco
1 pupils achieve the expected standard or higher.

Check Structure
Pages 1-5 start with easier words to make the phonics screening check accessible and determine if ch
relatively simple words. However words at the end of pages 6-10 are around the level of difficulty childr
the end of Year 1. These items provide information on whether children are working above or below the

Non-Assessed Content in Check

The assessment of comprehension is not included in the phonic screening check. Other Key stage 1 a
cover wider aspects of reading and writing.

By the end of Year 1 children should:

1. Apply phonic knowledge and skill as the prime approach to reading unfamiliar words that are not com
2. Read many frequently encountered words (high frequency words) automatically.
3. Read phonically decodable three-syllable words.
4. Read a range of age appropriate texts fluently.
5. Demonstrate understanding of age appropriate texts.

It is vital children are given the opportunity to develop these skills throughout Year 1 in addition
decoding skills that are assessed in the phonics screening check.
Using The Practice Tests
Three tests are included in this book, Practice Test, 2012's Check, 2013's Check. Each test is forma
actual Phonic Screening Check.
These tests should be worked through from page 1 to page 10 as this is the order schools will follo
checks.
Before The Test: Ensure you have looked at each word in the test and how to pronounce the word to
that your child is reading the words correctly. Do not tell your child if they are correct or incorrect du
the words they find difficult. Follow the instructions above: 'Scoring the Check'.
Start The Test: On the first page of the 'Check', tell your child to read the words and that some of the
are the names of the imaginary creatures on the page.
During The Test: Encourage your child to read the words but try not to move children on too fast.
After The Test: Use the 'Marking' section above to determine whether your child has reached the
words your child incorrectly read, this will help you determine the sounds your child may be having d
your child needs practice in.
For More Practice: For touch capable devices: links are included to let you can skip between pag
order and skip between tests.
