Question 1

In the pulley system shown in Figure 1, assume that the cable is massless and inextensible, and
assume that the pulley masses are negligible. The force f is a known function of time.

a) Draw the FBD of the system (5 marks)

b) Obtain the expression for the natural frequency (20 marks)

Question 2

For each of the following models:

(a) ̈ ̇
(b) ̈ ̇
(c) ̈ ̇

(1) Obtain the free response with the initial conditions ( ) and ̇ ( ) (20 marks)
(2) Estimate how long it will take for the free response to disappear (10 marks)

Question 3

A 50-kg instrument is used on a table that vibrates due to nearby machinery. The principal
frequency component is 1500 rpm. Determine whether isolator A or isolator B, whose load
deflection curves are given in the below, can be used at each of the four corners of the instrument
so that no more than 25% of the table motion is transmitted to the instrument. Determine how
much added mass is required, if any. Assume a damping ratio of 0.02.

(20 marks)

Question 4

A mass-spring-damper system is described by the model:

̈ ̇ ( )

Find the total (free +forced) response of the system at: (a) zero initial conditions (10 marks)

(b) ( ) ; ̇( ) (15 marks)
