beaches in St. Ann, Jamaica over a six (6) month period. (Entry #3)

Objectives: 1. To observe the coastal zones for evidence of wat

and land depletion
2. To collect water sample from the sites for colifo
tests
3. To identify the various forms of pollutants at the
coastal zones
4. To observe and record noticeable changes to the
landscapes and coastal zones
5. To interview users of the coastal zones
6. To capture visual images to support coastal deple

Activities:
The researchers, as usual were divided into groups to
obtain the relevant information from the sites; The grou
sizes were reduced based on the availability of all the
students but there was a satisfactory representation fr
the cohorts. Water sample was taken from the sea at a
three locations and observations made of the sites.
Evidence of beach degradation and how the coastal zone
were utilized was noted in journals or notebooks.
Further discussions were entertained with users of the
sites to ascertain information about the topic under
investigation especially in light the reason/s for the
increased garbage on sites 1 and 3.

Site 2 had a lot more persons on location than the other

sites. The least number of persons were seen at fantasy
beach and there was an increased at Flavours beach as t
area was used mainly for swimming. Site 1 had a few
customers at the makeshift restaurants, shops and beac
area.

* Site 1: The researchers observed clear sea with low turbid

Observations: increased garbage disposal units but bins were overflowing wit
garbage, increased Styrofoam boxes, bottles and smoke from

* Site 2: An increased in the users of the beach, natural sand

banks, reduced in garbage and debris on site, low tides and
Site 2: Flavours Beach, Runaway Bay turbidity. Evidence of land reclamation.

* Site 3: Improvement in turbidity, Piles of sand and garbage

site, efforts made to clean beach, sand /beach erosion increas
Site 3: Fantasy Beach, Priory strong winds and waves.

Interpretative Comments: Site 1: The researchers believe that the increased in garbag
on this beach was due to a recent party that was kept on the s
There were efforts made to clear the area of the garbage tha
had accumulated from this activity, hence the bins that were
filled to capacity, Styrofoam containers and bottles on the
beach; and a fire for the incineration of garbage.

Site 2: The researchers believe that one of the reasons for

impeccable state of the Flavours beach was due to the fact th
proprietor has invested in keeping his business place or proper
environmentally friendly; especially because of its location, in
tourist resort area. There has been regular-daily scheduled fo
the cleaning of the beach. In addition, measures were taken t
restore depleted soil near stormwater drain, which could lead
depletion and ultimately flooding, if careful attention were no
given to same. On this site, there is clear evidence of a proper
management team in place to steer and implement environmen
friendly activities. The staff at this location are cognizant th
the beach is destroyed then their economic gains and livelihoo
would be affected.

Site 3: Conversely, Fantasy beach lacks proper management e

though there have been efforts to clean the beach. It appear
if this beach is not cleaned on a consistent basis. The beach
serves mainly the residents of the area, as well as, adjacent
communities. Its proximity to the parish capital, St. Ann’s Bay
also note-worthy. Most of these areas are walking-distance to
the site.
The secondary succession or new growth of almond plants was
depleted. Erosion of the beach and seed weeds deposition wer
increased due destructive waves, rough sea, swells and hightid
The winds and waves in longshore drift on the other hand,
created piles of garbage and sand mounds; and large deposits
seed weeds
