Subject: Jackhammering – 310 and 270, 325 & 410 Series Heat Pumps

Rheem Technical Bulletin TB10 012 (1/12/2010) details the requirements regarding
customer advice and pipework inspection for any heat pump product reported as jack
hammering, vibrating or emitting an excessively loud noise.

These requirements remain current.

The requirements regarding the jackhammering phenomenon are now broadened as

follows:

Any 310 or 270/325/410 series heat pump found to be jackhammering must be

immediately decommissioned and replaced (under warranty)
o This requirement also applies to 310 series heat pumps exhibiting the
behaviour known as “relay chattering”

Any 310 or 270/325/410 series heat pump reported to be jackhammering, where

jackhammering can not be positively excluded, must be immediately
decommissioned and replaced (under warranty)
o This requirement also applies to 310 series heat pumps reported to be
exhibiting the behaviour known as “relay chattering”

Any 310 or 270/325/410 series heat pump found with a broken refrigerant suction
line must be immediately decommissioned and replaced (under warranty)

The usual requirement to obtain an Authorisation Number for a replacement still

applies.

If the heat pump module is unable to be replaced immediately, its heat pump functionality
MUST be disabled and its functionality limited to element operation only, by taking ALL the
steps on the following page:

Isolate power before disabling heat pump functionality.

270/325/410 Series Heat Pumps

1. The mains power cable must be disconnected at its plug on the underside of the
heat pump module’s controller.
2. The compressor must be disconnected at its plug on the underside of the heat
pump module’s controller.
3. The tank temperature sensor(s) must be disconnected at the plug(s) on the
underside of the heat pump module’s controller.
4. An Element Plug (P/N 056041) must be fitted to the mains power cable.

310 Series Heat Pumps

1. Disconnect the orange cable from the printed circuit board, as shown in the pictures
below. Once disconnected, the terminal plug must be made safe using electrical
tape.
2. Disconnect one of the sensor cables from the printed circuit board, as shown in the
picture below. Once disconnected, the sensor plug must be made safe using
electrical tape.
