Solve the following:

1. A triangular beam has an effective depth of 687.50 mm and a base with of 750 mm. The beam carries an ultimate moment of 197 KN-
m, 𝑓′𝑐 = 27.5 MPa & 𝑓𝑦 = 414.7 MPa. a.) Compute the location of the neutral axis of the beam ( 8 points ), b.) the value of the total
compressive force of concrete ( 3 points ), and c.) the steel area required ( 3 points ).

2. The hollow box beam in the figure must carry a factored moment of 540 KN-m. , 𝑓′𝑐 = 28 MPa & 𝑓𝑦 = 345 MPa, Es = 200 000 MPa.
a.) Compute the location of the neutral axis of the beam, b.) balanced steel area, and c.) maximum area permitted by the code. ( 4 points
each )

3. T-beam section properties: b = 813 mm, d = 305 mm, bw = 203 mm,𝑓′𝑐 = 20.7 MPa & 𝑓𝑦 = 414.7 MPa, Es = 200 GPa and hf = 102
mm. Find the following: a.) depth of the stress block b.) steel area required and c.) number of 28 mmØ bars for tension if the required
moment is 221 KN-m. ( 5 points each )

4. The floor system shown has slab thickness of 75 mm. Spacing of beams center to center is 1.8 m. Span of beam is 5.4 m. The beam
is subjected to a dead load moment of 270 KN-m and a live load moment of 460 KN-m,𝑓′𝑐 = 20.7 MPa & 𝑓𝑦 = 345.6 MPa. Compute the
following: a.) the depth of stress compression block (15 points), b.) area of steel in tension ( 5 points ), and c.) maximum steel ratio
required by the 2001 NSCP Specs. ( 10 points ).

5. A rectangular beam reinforced for tension at the bottom As = 5087 mm2 and the top As’ = 2035 mm2. The width of the beam is 280
mm and a total depth of 590 mm. Steel covering at the bottom is 80 mm and at the top is only 50 mm. If fc’ = 35 MPa, fy = 400 MPa.
Assume all steel yields. Calculate the following a.) the location of the neutral axis from top, b.) the value of the compressive force carried
by concrete alone, and c.) the nominal moment capacity of the beam. ( 5 points each )

6. A rectangular beam with a simple span of 6 m supports a dead load of 17.5 KN/m and a live load of 36.5 KN/m. For architectural
reasons the cross section is limited to 300 mm width and a total depth of 540 mm, with an effective depth of 460 mm. The dead load
includes the weight of the beam. If fc’ = 20.68 MPa, fy = 275.8 MPa. Determine the a.) factored uniform load ( 5 points )b.) steel area
required for compression ( 10 points )and c.) steel area required for tension.( 5 points )
