GAYATRI VIDYA PARISHAD COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (AUTONOMOUS)
Madhurawada, Visakhapatnam Affiliated to JNT University – K, Kakinada B.Tech. V-Semester Supplementary Examinations, November-2014 Reinforced Concrete Structures – I (Civil Engineering) Date : 20-11-2014 Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks : 60 1. Question No. 1 is Compulsory. 2. Answer any FOUR from questions 2 to 8. 3. All parts of a Question must be answered in one place to get valued. 4. Use the following codes: IS 456-200. 5. Draw neat sketches and reinforcement details where ever necessary. 6. Assume any necessary data.
1. Answer the following in 4 or 5 sentences.
a) Differentiate between under reinforced and over reinforced sections. 2 Marks b) When do you prefer a doubly reinforced section? 2 Marks c) Define balanced section. 2 Marks d) Write the differences between limit state and working stress methods. 2 Marks e) Differentiate one-way slab two way slab. 2 Marks f) Differentiate between short column and long column. 2 Marks g) What are the functions of foundations? 2 Marks h) Why it is difficult to calculate accurately the crack width of the beam. 2 Marks 2. What are the assumptions for the design of a reinforced concrete section for limit state of 11 Marks collapse in bending? Derive the stress block parameters for a rectangular singly reinforced cross section. 3. Design a rectangular reinforced concrete beam for a clear span of 4200 mm. The super 11 Marks imposed load is 35 kN/m and the size of the beam is limited to 250 mm x 400 mm. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel. Support width is 300 mm each and effective cover is 50 mm. 4. A simply supported beam, 300 mm wide and 600 mm effective depth carries a uniformly 11 Marks distributed load of 70 kN/m including self weight, over an effective span of 5m. The reinforcement consists of 5 bars of 25 mm diameter. Design the shear reinforcement for the beam. Assume grade of concrete M20 grade of steel Fe 415 width of support = 400mm. 5. Design a RC rectangular beam simply supported over an effective span of 5m to support an 11 Marks imposed load of 15 kN/m inclusive of its self weight. Adopt M 30 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel. Provide effective depth two times the width using working stress method. 6. Design a RCC floor slab for a room having inside dimensions 6 m X 3.5 m restrained an all 11 Marks the four edges if the super imposed service load is 4 kN/m2 the thickness of wall is 30 cm and the slab is having two adjacent edges discontinuous. 7. Design a square short column to carry an axial load of 1800 kN using M20 grade concrete and 11 Marks Fe 415 steel. 8 Design a isolated footing for a square column 400 x 400 mm carrying an axial load of 800 kN. 11 Marks The SBC of soil may be taken as 200 kN/m2. Use M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel. Page 1 of 1 Course Code :ACE1119/2009 R-2009 Reg. No :
