15. How the net effective sectional area of a single angle member is
determined?

16. Define slab and write their classification.

PART – C

17. (a) Design a singly reinforced rectangular beam to carry an UDL of

25kN/m (inclusive of self weight) over an effective span of 5.6m
for the limit state of collapse in flexure using M20 grade
concrete and Fe415 grade steel.
(Or)
(b) Design a doubly reinforced rectangular beam simply supported
at its ends to carry a service live load of 28kN/m and dead load
of 12kN/m over a clear span of 7m. The width and overall
depth of beams are kept as 350mm×610mm respectively. Use
M25 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel. Width of support is
300mm.

18. (a) Design a roof slab for a conference hall of clear dimension
3.6m×12m using M20 grade concrete and Fe415 grade steel by
limit state method. No access is provided to the roof. Adopt
width of support as 230mm. Weathering course of weight 2.2
kN/m2 is provided over the slab. Check the slab for shear and
stiffness.
(Or)
(b) Design a simply supported roof slab for a room of clear size
2.4m×3.2m. The thickness of wall all round is 200mm. Access
is not provided to the roof. The corners of slab are not held
down. Weight of weathering course is 1.5 kN/m2. Use M20
concrete and Fe415 steel.

19. (a) A simply supported rectangular beam of 320mm×600mm

overall size is reinforced with 5 numbers of 20mm diameter.
Fe415 grade steel bars as tension reinforcement at its midspan
with a clear cover of 25mm. It carries an imposed load of
22kN/m over an effective span of 6m. Two bars are curtailed
at a distance of 300mm from the centre of supports. The
concrete is of M20 grade. Design the shear reinforcement for
the support section using Fe415 grade bars by limit state
method.

(b) The vertical height of each floor of a residential apartment is

3.1m. The clear size of staircase room is 2.10 m×4.25m. Plan a
doglegged staircase for the building and draw the arrangement
with all dimensions marked.

20. (a) Design a circular column with circular ties to carry an axial load
of 1800 kN. Assume 2% of steel. Use M20 concrete and Fe415
steel.
(Or)
(b) Design a square column footing for the following data:
Column size - 420×420 mm
Axial load on column – 1200 kN.
SBC of soil - 180 kN/m2
Assume the self weight of footing as 150kN. Use M20 concrete
and Fe415 steel.

21. (a) An ISLB 400 @ 569 N/m is to be used as a simply supported

beam to carry a super imposed load of 40kN/m over a span of
6.1m. Take fy=300 MPa and E=2×105 MPa. Check the safety of
the beam.
(Or)
(b) A 120mm×8mm steel plate is connected at its end to a 10mm
thick gusset by side fillet weld of 130mm length each. The
yield and ultimate stresses of the material are 410 MPa and
540 MPa respectively. Determine the design tensile strength of
the plate.
