The Reflective Diary

The Reflective Diary should be maintained by the student and included as an appendix in the
final report. The Learning outcomes provide a context for the reflective entries, which should
focus on the learning achieved during the training program. Reflection is a structured thought
process that helps to learn from the experiences, a student has during the project semester.
The aim of the diary is to bridge the gap between engineering education and the authentic
workplace practice one experiences during the project semester.
What do you reflect on?

Reflection is most effective when it is applied to areas of your experience that are memorable or
significant in some way. For example, an incident, event or activity that
  Went better or worse than you expected or was unexpected 
  Caused you to stop and think or challenged your assumptions about what you thought
would occur 

In short, the best reflections tend to be about those events or incidents that challenged
what you thought before, presented a dilemma or left you with a sense of unease.

How do you reflect?

i. Descriptive Process: Write a paragraph that is straightforward account of the incident or

event or activity, including any context you deem relevant. This helps to take you back to
the event and start the reflective process.
ii. The Reflection: During this stage, you start reflecting on the event by questioning
yourself, for example

 What made it memorable or what made me uneasy?

 What has surprised me about this?
 What has challenged the way I think or the way in thoughts things would be? 
 hat were my assumptions about how things would be compared to how they are?
 
 What have I learnt about myself as a result of this event? 

 What have I learnt about the practice of the environment I am in? 

The Outcome

All the reflections must have an outcome and these needs to be clearly articulated and
presented at the end of the reflection. Outcomes should include a new understanding, a plan to
research something or a commitment to you or others.

Descriptive Process:
During this week, I resorted to searching other advanced databases, such as ORBIT database. I
began with citation search, by searching the citations of the patent. I searched for the forward
citations of the backward citations of the patent and the backward citation of the forward
citations of the patent. Even after analyzing a large number of patents, I was not able to find a
central result. So I proceeded to more advanced search techniques, such as keyword based search
by forming strings on Orbit.
Reflection:
I was really frustrated as even after analyzing a large number of patents, I was not able to find a
central result that could meet the expectations of my team. However, I was able to keep patience
and hope intact and continue my search.
Outcome:
This week taught me a vital lesson on patience and perseverance. I realised that there may be
times when despite working hard, results may not appear in your favour, but you have to keep
going with same zeal in hope to find the desired results.
WEEK 12

(20th March to 24th March)

Descriptive Process:
During this week, I continued by search on Orbit database. I did keyword searching by forming
strings through effective use of keywords, synonyms, and operators. My initial search strategy
was to run a broad string, then start narrowing it down till I get a set of results that could be
analyzed. Even after analyzing a large number of patents, I had only peripheral results. I needed
central results, which covered novelty of the disclosure to complete my project. I took advice
from experienced members of my team. With their help, I was able to identify minor flaws in my
search strategy. I rectified those flaws and continued searching. I was able to able to obtain
better result sets to be analyzed. Also, in this week we had our first half fourth session of C2C.
This session taught me about ABCD of success. The major portion covered here was A and B
namely the attitude that comes into our behavior.

moved on to the classification based searching. I extracted classifications related to the patent
from the subject patent, reference patents and top classifications from analysed result sets. The
classifications included US Classification, CPC, and DWPI Manual codes. I searched the classes
exhaustively and restricted the result sets with keywords. After classification search, I moved on
the Inventor and Assignee search by extracting the top assignees and inventors, and searching for
the result within the set of patents of those inventors and assignees. After rigorous analysis of a
number of patents, I was able to identify a central result. I finished my search on Orbit database,
and moved on to other databases like Thomson Innovation. The second half of C2C was also
held that helped me to have a better insight of carrier in IP.
Reflection:
After exhaustive searching, I was able to find a central result that could meet the expectations. It
provided a sense of accomplishment. I realised that if you continue to work with patience and in
right direction, you will find the result.
Outcome:
After finding a result, I had a sense of accomplishment. However, in order to prevent yourself
from mediocrity, you have to keep searching for a better alternative until you arrive at the best.
With this thought, I continued my search. I got more clarity about future and career aspects of
IP.
