The Reflective Diary
The Reflective Diary should be maintained by the student and included as an appendix in the
final report. The Learning outcomes provide a context for the reflective entries, which should
focus on the learning achieved during the training program. Reflection is a structured thought
process that helps to learn from the experiences, a student has during the project semester.
The aim of the diary is to bridge the gap between engineering education and the authentic
workplace practice one experiences during the project semester.
What do you reflect on?
Reflection is most effective when it is applied to areas of your experience that are memorable or
significant in some way. For example, an incident, event or activity that
Went better or worse than you expected or was unexpected
Caused you to stop and think or challenged your assumptions about what you thought
would occur
In short, the best reflections tend to be about those events or incidents that challenged
what you thought before, presented a dilemma or left you with a sense of unease.
The Outcome
All the reflections must have an outcome and these needs to be clearly articulated and
presented at the end of the reflection. Outcomes should include a new understanding, a plan to
research something or a commitment to you or others.
Weekly Reflective Report
Descriptive Process:
The second week of training also included a part of the induction program and gave me an
opportunity to interact with Mr. Pavan Vaish, Chief Operating Officer (Global). He shared his
experiences, expectations and visions with us. I was introduced to the field of intellectual
property, clients of United Lex, and the projects undertaken by United Lex. We also had a
connect with the IP HR head Mrs. Smitha Pillai who gave us insights into the organization
structure and the order of escalation matrix in the organization. She also help us understand who
to approach in case of any help required. A number of training sessions were held in this week
too. I received training on types of patent searching- patentability, validity, infringement, citation
searching, classification and types, and related entities searching. Assignments were given to
implement the training provided. Training sessions also covered analyzing the patents for
problem, need, solution, function and structure and finding relevant keywords. The training
included sessions for creating strings, extracting assignee and citations, identifying classes,
family analysis, introducing continuation, CIP, and divisional applications, and using operators
effectively. Related assignments were given for assessing the novelty of patents and Patentability
Assessment Search (PAS).
Reflection:
The training sessions covered the concepts exhaustively. The exercises required deep
understanding of the technology domains of the patents or invention disclosures, assessing their
novelty, searching the databases for finding results, and analyzing whether the invention is
patentable. The exercises required me to develop understanding of new technologies. This task
was challenging as in a short time I had to get familiar with new technology domains.
Outcome:
The exercises provided were interesting and enhanced my skills of deep understanding and
technical analysis. They also helped me in developing the ability of understanding a new
technology in a limited time.
WEEK 4
WEEK 10
WEEK 11
WEEK 13
WEEK 14
WEEK 15
WEEK 16
(17th April to 21st April)
Descriptive Process:
This week, I completed the report. The challenging task was to map the NOVELTY of the
invention disclosure to the references. The claim was very detailed and contained many
components. It required a technical expertise and analytical skills to map the references with the
subject patent. To map the features of the disclosure, the intricacies of both the reference patent
and the disclosure had to be captured. It required clarity of working of all the components
present in the patent. Working on the report and preparing claim charts improved my
presentation skills. The review by experienced members of the team helped me in identifying
various errors in my mapping. Finally, after rectifications I was able to deliver my report and I
was assigned a new project.
Reflection:
This week, I had completed my report which required me to capture intricacies of the subject
patent and the references. It provided me a sense of accomplishment. The reviews by
experienced members of my team helped me in identifying various loopholes and ways to
improve my report.
Outcome:
During the project, I gained knowledge of technology that I was unfamiliar with. I was able to
see how competition and progressive research leads to advancement of technology. After this
project, I was excited to work on a new project by using the skills I had developed and, with a
hope to develop some new skills.
WEEK 17
WEEK 18
Reflection:
This week, I had completed my search exhaustively. I was ready to prepare the report. I was able
to complete my search in a short period. This was due to increased expectations from me which
helped me to deliver in a more efficient manner.
Outcome:
I was able to find good results in a limited time. Proper utilization of hours at workplace had
enabled me to increase my efficiency. I realized that increased expectations helps in delivering
better results. I developed the skill of working under pressure to meet the deadlines and I could
see an improvement in my efficiency.
