QUIZLET: THE BEST APP FOR MEMORIZING

Since my first day of university I have been looking for an app which could help me to
memorize faster the contents of the course. I was nearly going to give up when I found the
perfect app for this aim: quizlet.

Quizlet is an application which can be used in your mobile phone or computer. Its main
purpose is to help students to memorize through cards, emphasizing the use of repetition in
the process. You can create your own cards with the contents you are interested on or use
someone else’s cards. It focuses on a long-term learning, which is what students look for.

By only using this app for an hour per day, you could master more than 200 words in less than
a month. The mobile phone version is very useful as you can use it in your spare time waiting
for the bus or even in the bathroom. It is up to you, but I warn you that it could be addictive!

I would especially recommend this app for students who want to learn huge amounts of
vocabulary or terms in a short time. It is a useful tool which they can use for their benefit as it
saves time which can be inverted in other subjects.

I have been using cards as a memorising method since I have sense of reason. However, this
app which takes this trick to our screens has changed my perception of the use of technology
in our academic life and I highly recommend its use.

The editor of your college website has asked you to write a review of 2 films you have seen
recently, saying which one would be most suitable for an end-of-course film night at your
college and saying why would you not choose the other film.

End-of-course film night: my recommendations

I have recently seen two films which I considered to be possible candidates for our end-of-
term film night: ‘Harry Potter and the philosopher's stone’ and ‘on the basis of sex’. Both have
interesting issues which makes them special, but only one can be screened.

Harry Potter’s first movie (2001) is an adaptation of the book with the same name by J.K.
Rowling. It tells the adventures during the first year of Harry Potter in Hogwarts. It marked a
generation of children who would grow up with the movies. I consider it will be really moving
for the students and will make them think about their evolution during the course and life.
However, we must bear in mind that not all students are fans of this saga. Some of them find
the story boring and the animation and scripts mediocre.

‘On the basis of sex’ is a biographical film about Ruth Gader, a lawyer who fought for the
equality of women in the USA. As it deals with a topic as important as feminism is crucial for
the students to see this movie. It is true that some would prefer a lighter film to see at the end
of the course, such as a comedy, however I believe that there is no better way to end up the
course than learning something new.

I am a big fan of Harry Potter, but I consider that for this context a modern movie about
current issues is more adequate and interesting and will engage more with the young
audience.

Send us a review of a TV series which you think will cheer us all up, giving reasons for your
choice.

Everyone needs to find a TV series which makes them laugh and escape from our monotonous
and sad routines. That is exactly what I found in ‘Brooklin 99’, which I consider the best
comedy and crime series I have ever seen.

The series is about the detective Jake Peralta and his colleagues, who work in the police
precinct 99 of Brooklin. They not only solve the most difficult cases but also makes you cry
laughing in the process. Even though I was sceptic about mixing crime with humour I gave
‘Brooklin 99’ an opportunity to see if it was as funny as the critics said. It did not only not
disappoint me, but it also exceeded my initial expectations of this type of series.

What makes this series the most hilarious comedy is its characters’ personalities and
relationship between each other. All of them have an extremely funny and extravagant sense
of humour. What outstands from this comedy is that all characters humours, personalities and
even nationalities are very different, so you always find someone who has the sense of humour
that you love.

Therefore, I can highly recommend the series to anyone as there will always be a character
whose sense of humour and jokes will make you laugh. Even the most secondary character or
the ones who only appear occasionally are hilarious. Without any doubt this series is perfect
for any occasion and for any person. You can find the complete series on Netflix and the next
season will be released any time soon! You will not regret it.
