This is part of an email you have received from your friend Anna in New Zealand:

I'm doing a project about people's reading habits in different countries. Can you tell
me about your country? Can you give me some idea about the situation in your
country? What changes have there been in what people read and how they read? Is
this the same for all age groups?

Write your email.

Dear Sara,
Thanks so much for your email. It was so good to hear from you! Your project seems to be
very interesting and I can’t wait to see the results!

In Spain we are taught fromsince a very young age about the importance of reading and
have a place for doing so. Teachers encourage children at a very early age to read not only
the course’s books but also other types such as adventure or fiction books to use our
imagination.

Most of the children who enjoyed reading in primary school continue doing so during their
adolescence. But sadly, not all the kids in Spain have good teachers and parents who teach
them reading habits. Other children, even though they had this luck, did not develop their
love for reading when they grew up and are not active readers in their adulthood.

You know that kids nowadays love new technologies, social media, and videogames. They
lose their interest inon reading because of them. Even though they are taught the reading
habits and benefits, they still prefer to spend their free time enjoying something related to
videogames or YouTube rather than reading classics.

In Spain this fact has changed the preferences in the new generation of readers. Nowadays
80% of Spanish children between the ages of 5 to 15 would choose to buy their favourite
youtuber’s book or a comic about Minecraft rather than ‘classical’ books.

I hope I have helped you in your investigation!

Let me know if you have any doubt or further questions!

Take care,

Rut Suárez García
