Properties of Nouns
Learning Goals: Be able to identify the four properties of a Noun in a given sentence

The four properties of Nouns:

1. Type

2. Gender

3. Number

4. State

.A Noun is: Proper or Common?

Type can be classified into two :

a. Proper Noun/Definite –َ‫املَْع ِرَفة‬

There are seven classes of Proper Nouns


1. The Noun attached with ‫لَّلم( ال‬ َِ ‫)امل َع َّرف‬
َّ ‫َب‬
Eg: ‫س‬ ََّ ‫ال ِكتَاب‬
َ ‫َالش ْم‬,َ
2. Name of specific people, places, locations
ِ ‫احلجرَاألَس َود‬ ِ
Eg: َ‫ستَان‬
ْ ‫َبك‬,َ
َ َْ َ ََ َ,ََ‫َاملَ ْسجدَاحلََرام‬,َ‫َم َّكة‬,
ََ َ‫بَكْر‬ ,َ‫َمح َّمد‬
3. Pronouns َ /‫ض َمائِر‬

5. Relative ْ ْ ْ
Eg: ‫الَّ ِذي‬

6. Mudaaf in an Idaafa construction َ ‫ضافَا ََل‬

Eg: َّ ‫كِتَاب‬
‫َالرج َِل‬
7. The noun that identifies a person being addressed (‫ادى‬
ََ َ‫)املَن‬
Eg: َ ِ‫َعائ‬
َ‫شة‬ َ ‫ََي‬
ِ ‫الن‬
b. Common Nouns/Indefinite –َ‫َّكرة‬
َ
They will be suffixed with Tanween in singulars. Eg: ‫ ِريْح‬,‫مَسماء‬ or with ending

combinations like َ‫ن‬


َ ‫ ْو‬and ‫ ات‬and ‫يِ من‬ and َ‫ ات‬and ِ‫آن‬ َِ ‫ ََت‬and
and ‫ن‬ ِ ْ ‫امتم‬
َ‫ اَيْ ِن‬and ‫ي‬
for the plurals and the duals.

Note:
a) When ‫ ال‬is prefixed to a noun, the tanween falls off.
b) A noun that has neither the ‫ ال‬nor the tanween is called a ‘light noun’ eg: ‫ِا ْب َرا ِه ْمُي‬
