REACTION ON CHAPTER 7: FILIPINO FAMILY, CULTURE, RELIGIOUS SYMBOLS

(MARRIAGE, TYPES AND FORMS OF FAMILY, MARRIAGE TRADITION OF THE
PHILIPPINES)

When it comes to family, Filipinos are one of the billions of people who value their families the
most. They have a strong bond with their families that has been observe all through the years. We
Filipinos give primary importance to family relationships, especially between parents and children, and
even to our extended family members. Almost all of the world’s population live in family units, but the
structures or forms vary from one society to another. Additionally, members of the same family often
work at the same place. This is one way that elders in the community provide opportunities and support
for younger individuals.
In the Philippines, dating often comes in stages, beginning with courtship. Typically, a man will
try to impress a female by courting her. Most Filipinos today have a deeper appreciation for personal
freedom and the quality of interpersonal relationships within marriage. Individuals have a significant
level of freedom in terms of choosing marriage partners. In some families, it is expected for the
prospective partner to gain approval of their potential in-laws. However, in urban areas, dating and
marriage practices tend to be less conservative and are becoming more influenced by the West.
Marriage in the Philippines does not only consists of the bride, groom and the priest. It is joined by two
families coming together as a community.
Expectations and practices of marriage are heavily shaped by the Catholic Church.
Traditionally, the groom’s family pays for the wedding and the grandparents act as the primary
witnesses or sponsors. The bride’s gown is often custom made and both the bride and groom wear
white. Marriage represenrts being committed to each other and being one with God. Their unity will be
stronger as they build trust, happiness, family and many more. Filipinos value marriage so much that
being separated man or woman is often viewed negatively by the public.
