Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid
revolutionary, politician and philanthropist who was
the President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. His
government worked to end apartheid,
racism, poverty and inequality.

Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his


life. He gained international respect for his activism,
and received more than 250 honors. He is held in
deep respect within South Africa, where he is often
referred to by his Xhosa clan name, Madiba.

Bob Marley
Robert Marley was a Jamaican reggae singer-songwriter,
musician, and guitarist who achieved international
fame. Starting in 1963 with the group the Wailers, he created
a distinctive songwriting and vocal style that was loved by
audiences worldwide. After the Wailers ended in 1974, Marley
started a solo career and released his first album Exodus in
1977, which established his worldwide reputation and his
status as one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.
Marley was a Pan-Africanist, and
believed in the unity of African people
worldwide. One of his most famous
songs is called ‘Africa Unite.’

Maya Angelou
Maya Angelou was an American author,
poet, dancer, actress, and singer. She
published seven autobiographies, three
books of essays, and several books of
poetry, and was credited with a list of
plays, movies, and television shows.
She received dozens of awards and more than 50
honorary degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of
seven autobiographies about her childhood and early
adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird
Sings (1969), is about her life up to the age of 17.

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong was an American jazz


trumpeter, singer, and an influential
figure in jazz music. Coming to
prominence in the 1920s, Armstrong
was a big influence in jazz. With his
recognizable voice, Armstrong was
also an influential singer. Renowned
for his charismatic stage presence and
voice almost as much as for his
trumpet-playing.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was an


American Baptist minister,
activist, humanitarian, and leader in the
African-American Civil Rights
Movement. He is best known for his role
in the advancement of civil
rights using nonviolence.
King also helped to organize the
1963 March on Washington, where he
delivered his famous "I Have a Dream"
speech. There, he established his
reputation as one of the greatest
speakers in American history.
On October 14, 1964, King received
the Nobel Peace Prize.
