Procedure for A668 bars for Yoke A668-Yoke/01
Forgings Die No.: 1085

1.0 SCOPE:
This procedure applicable for Magnetic Particle Examination of establishes a method of locating
surface and near surface discontinuities in Peeled bars (Before Forging) stage of A668 Raw
material 75 RCS

2.0 APPLICABLE SPECIFICATION& CODES :

PP-E-00009/R1
ASME Boiler & pressure vessel Code section-V, Article 7 ASME Section –III Para NB-2545.3

3.0 EXAMINATION PERSONNEL:

Personnel experienced and qualified in accordance with SNT-TC-1A Level I/II shall perform the
Examination. Interpretation of test results shall be carried out by ISNT/ASNT level II. Testing
procedures shall be formulated by level II personnel.

4.0 SURFACE PREPARATION:

Surface of the part to be examined shall be dry and free from all dirt, oil & grease.

5.0 METHOD OF EXAMINATION :

Wet Fluorescent Particle examination -on Bars of 75 mm RCS.
Examination shall be done by the continuous method. I.e. Magnetic current remains on while the
examination medium is being applied and while excess of the examination medium is being
removed.

6.0 EQUIPMENT:
A. Magnaflux make or suitable model with bench type unit.
B Fluorescent black light with black light intensity-min 1000 micro w/cm2..
B. Fluorescent Magnetic Powder.
C. Pie - Shaped ASTM Field indicator or KETOS Ring.
D. Centrifugal Tube with Stand.
E. Residual field Indicator.

7.0 CALIBRATION OF EQUIPMENT /REQUIRED VERIFICATION:

a) Frequency: Ammeters shall be calibrated at least once in SIX MONTH or whenever the
equipment has been subjected to major electric repair-periodic overhaul or damage.

b) Procedure: The Accuracy of the ammeters shall be verified by equipment traceable to national
standard. Comparative reading shall be taken for at least three different current
output levels encompassing the usable range.

c) Tolerance: Ammeter reading shall not deviate by more than 10% of full scale, relative to the
actual current value as showed by test meter.

Forgings Die No.: 1085

d) Black light intensity shall be checked for every six months to ensure minimum black light
intensity 1000µw/cm2.

8.0 TESTING MEDIUM:

a) Fluorescent Magnaflux, Suspensions for wet Method and Water.
b) The wet Suspension (bath) used in wet Method shall be agitated constantly and strength of bath
shall be checked and ensure that correct concentration is maintained.
c) The setting volume shall be 0.1 to 0.4 CC per 100 ml bath Sample for fluorescent particles when
allowed to settle for 30 minutes in a centrifuge.

9.0 MAGNETIZATION :
a) Circular Magnetization :
Magnetization is accomplished by passing AC/HWDC, by head shot method keeping the bars
suitably on V-supports of the machine. Place the pie shaped ASTM-Field indicator on the job over
the area under examination and adjust the Magnetization step gradually until correct flux density is
evident on ASTM-field indicator by spraying testing medium simultaneously .if clear indications
observed on ASTM-field indicator, record and set the current for testing.
Apply current shot and examine under the black light while simultaneously spraying a small
quantity of the prepared medium over the area under examination by a sprayer. Mark indications if
any and evaluate them.
The temperature of the part shall not exceed 570C for wet magnetic particle method(As per ASME,
Section –V and SE-709 Clause8.4).
75 mm RCS bars shall be magnetized by passing 1200 to 2400 amperes (Current will be set on pie
gauge)

b) Longitudinal magnetization:
Magnetization is accomplished by a coil, fed by DC/HWDC. Place the Pie shaped ASTM-field
indicator on the job over the area under examination and adjust the Magnetization step gradually
until correct flux density is evident on ASTM-field indicator by spraying testing medium
simultaneously. If clear indications observed on ASTM-field indicator, record and set the current
for testing.
Apply current shot and examine under the black light while spraying a small quantity of the
prepared medium simultaneously over the area under examination by a sprayer. Mark indications if
any and evaluate them.
Suggest current for 75 mm RCS bars is 4.5 KAT.

10. 0 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

Following relevant indication are unacceptable.

a) Any linear indication greater that 5mm long

b) Round indications with dimensions greater than 3 mm for thickness less than 16mm & greater than
5mm for thickness 16 mm and greater.
c) Four or more relevant indications in line separated by 1.5 mm or less edge to edge.
d) Ten or more relevant indications in any 6 sq. inch of area whose major dimension is no more than
(150 mm) with dimension taken in the most unfavorable location relative to the indications being
evaluated.

11.0 EXAMINATION COVERAGE:

Examination shall be conducted with sufficient overlap to ensure 100% coverage at required
sensitivity.

12.0 POST EXAMINATION CLEANING.

The surface shall be clean and shall be free of the testing medium.

13.0 DEMAGNETIZATION:
After magnetic particle inspection, all bars shall be demagnetized. Demagnetization is achieved by
withdrawing the job through a coil carrying current at mains frequency. In this process the job is
subjected to a diminishing magnetic field of reversing polarity & stands demagnetized to level of 2
gauss Flux. Strength of residual filed is checked by residual file indicator.

14.0 DOCUMENTS:
A test report duly signed by WIFPL,YKEPL containing all relevant information shall be submitted to
NPCIL-QS on completion of examination for review.
