CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMERS BY PROPERTIES:

 THERMAL PROPERTIES

Thermal properties play a large role in the behavior of polymers, causing them
to react in different ways. Listed here are the properties of polymers in relation to
temperature.
I. Soften: as heat is applied, the polymers move from a stiff solid at low
temperatures to a soft foldable substance at a glass transition temperature, Tg.
II. Melt: similar to candle wax, crystalline polymers can melt when heated, but
normally at relatively high temperatures. Any polymers are amorphous and do
not exhibit a clear transition to melt, Tm.
III. Decompose: after melting, polymers do not vaporize (become a gas), break
down or depolymerize into smaller molecules or fragments at high
temperatures.
IV. Burn: for certain generic polymers, the fragment vapors fire in the presence of
oxygen and heat or ignition source
V. Soot: some polymers make large amounts of soot when they burn.

But there is a thermal properties that they called THERMOSETTING PLASTIC. It is a

type of plastics that once exposed to heat, becomes rigid. These content is also
known as thermoset polymer. The polymer is initially a liquid or soft solid. For certain
cases, the curing rate can be increased by increasing the pressure or by adding a
catalyst.
