Autumn Market Dramatic Play

Date: 10/8/18 Time: 10:00AM-11:00AM Theme: Fall
Group size: 3 Location: Dramatic Play Center

Ohio Early Learning and Developmental Standards

Domain: Social and Emotional Development
Strand: Relationships
Topic: Peer Interactions and Relationships
Benchmark/Standard:
 Interact with peers in more complex pretend play including planning,
coordination of roles, and cooperation.
 Demonstrate socially competent behavior with peers.

Interests and needs of the children: It will be of interest to the children because
usually they like to use the dramatic play center to cook, eat, and play with dolls. It will
be a nice change of scenery and a change of materials that the children can use. A lot of
the children tend to make a mess at the dramatic play center, the activity with the
leaves will give the children an opportunity to clean up the area with rakes. This can
help them with daily living in the classroom as well by modeling how to clean up an
area.

Objective: The child will be able to… socialize with peers in a positive way while
planning roles for the play area. Children will be raking leaves together to clean them
up or to jump in a pile. Children will also be picking apples off of the tree. They can
also participate in the Fall Market to purchase items and pretend to eat the food. The
children will be expected to share materials with their peers and interact in a positive
manner.

Assessment: Children will be assessed in their ability to a) socialize with other

children, b) share materials and have positive interactions with others, and c) planning
and coordinating roles within dramatic play.

Materials: leaves, rakes, bag for leaves, laundry basket, poster of a tree with Velcro
apples, red bags, market concession stand, phone, open/close sign

Procedures: We will arrive early to set up materials, such as, hanging up the apple tree,
putting out the leaves and rakes, and putting the market together.
1. Tell the children, “Today, we have set up a fall market because it is now the
season of fall. There are a couple different stations in the fall market such as apple
picking, raking leaves, and a market to buy fall food items like apples, pumpkins,
and other things.”
2. We are going to model for the children on how it all works, if needed, and
then observe to see how they do it.
3. We will monitor the behaviors, interactions between children, the use of
materials, and to see how the share the materials. If the children cannot
demonstrate sharing appropriately, the teachers will model for them.
4. Children will use a rake to make a pile of leaves to jump into or to put into the
“trash bag.”
5. When collecting apples, they will put it in a red bag to then purchase them at
the market stand.
6. They will purchase the items at the Fall Market.
7. Adaptation: I anticipate that children will be interested in different areas of
the dramatic play center. Some children might want to rake leaves, some might
want to pick apples, and some might want to participate in the market. I can
imagine that some children will try all three then move on to another center. It is
made for the children to explore their interests in the various fall activities
available to them. We can model sharing for the children and model how to use
the materials. We can ask students questions, such as, “can you tell me about
what you are doing here?”

Closure/transition: Children will then put the leaves in the basket, they have to close
the market with a closed sign, and then the children will move to the next activity.
