Activity
• Activity (or Task) is any portion of a project that
consumes time and/or resources
• Has a definable beginning and ending
• Time required to complete an activity is called
“Activity Duration”
1
Event
• Event is as instantaneous point in time
• It marks the beginning and ending of an Activity and is also
called “NODE”
Dummy Activity
• Dummy activity is an activity representing merely a
dependency of one activity over another
• It has zero duration and is represented by ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐> in
AOA networks
2
AOA Network
• Sometimes referred to as Project Network or Network
model

Drawing AOA Networks
• The activity description is shown above the
arrow
• The duration is shown beneath the arrow

Activity 10-20 represents Mobilization
and has a duration of 5 days

I‐J notation of activities
Activity i-j j
i
• i<j
• Use skip numbering
• Unique i‐j combinations
Network Diagramming Rules or Conventions
• Network logic most important
• Before an activity can begin, all activities preceding it must
be completed
• Arrows imply logical precedence only
4
Network Diagramming Rules or Conventions
• Not to time scale (except for time‐scaled networks)
• Draw from left to right
• Always provide arrowheads
• Loops cannot be created
• Start with single activity and with end with
single activity

5
• Provide Event/Node number, Act.ID and
activity duration
• Event/Node numbers must not be
duplicated
A

2
• Two events in a network may be directly
connected by no more than one activity

IPA Method
• A common structured method of ordering activities is to
use preceding activities (PA) and immediately preceding
activities (IPA) list
• Not always needed—but a good way to start
• Experienced schedulers will layout the network graphically

• Constraints
footing, wall, roof, lights

corresponding wall is erected
both windows installed at the same time
