1. Identify ways that warfare will be different in the latter half of the 21st century
2. Identify how these advances will affect international relations

Essential Questions--List some of the questions most important questions that will guide the learning.
1. How will new technologies change modern warfare?
2. What will constitute an “attack”? How will people perceive wars differently? (Like cyber
warfare)

Resources needed--List of readings, artifacts, technologies, videos...

Activities
Activity Description Time Allotted

Introduction and HW Opening slideshow that start with a homework 5-10 mins.
overview discussion and leads into a topic overview and a
presentation of overarching concepts needed for the
class.

Break out learning Each one of us will take an equal portion on the class 8 mins
and go in depth into one war technology with our group.
By the end, each person in the class will hopefully be
able to explain how their technology will have an impact
on war in the future, which leads into the next activity.

War Table Simulation All three groups will join back together as one large 12 min
group to participate in a war simulation. The class will
take the role of a war council for a country going to war
in the future. The class is tasked with coming up with
the smartest plan to win the war. Students will be
encouraged to contribute to the conversation about how
their technology will play a role in the war. The exercise
should be creative and very discussion based. And for
clarification, a large printed war map will be used with
figures to play out the war.

Final group discussion Bring the class back together and close the class. Go 5-10 mins
over each technology briefly and discuss the
implications of the technologies for keeping peace and
ect.. We will also answer and lingering questions.

Enduring understandings--What do you hope the students remember for a long time from now?
1. The next major war we fight will not resemble previous wars in history! Country will act with
haste and aim to shut down opposing governments with technology. Only then can the possibility
of land based invasion happen.
2. Future war will be fought primarily over resources (given the current track our economies are
on).

Ways for students to extend the learning--List some ways students can continue to learn about what
was taught during the lesson. This could be people to follow, things to read, watch, discuss...
1. Visit the Modern War Institute at West Point website https://mwi.usma.edu/ and read about how
technologies that are in development
2. Look into how drones, printing, and AI have been used in wars in the past and apply new
innovations to prior knowlage.
