Ambulation is the ability to walk without the need

for any kind of assistance. It is most often used
when describing the goals of a patient after a
surgery or physical therapy. In order to reach
a patient's goal of ambulation, they may require
assistance before they are able to walk around
on their own.

List the purposes of Ambulation:
The term ambulate means to walk. Ambulating patient keeps him more active and improves muscle tone and
strength in his legs. It also slows loss of bone mass and density related to osteoporosis. The patient who is up
walking has increased peristalsis and circulation. The patient also gets a sense of accomplishment and
maintains greater independence.
1. It helps strengthen the muscles, especially those of the abdomen and legs
2. It helps joint flexibility, especially that of the hips, knees, and ankles
3. It stimulates circulation, which helps prevent phlebitis and the development of stroke-causing clots
4. It helps prevent constipation because the movement of the abdominal muscles stimulates the intestinal tract

5. It helps prevent osteoporosis due to the mineral loss from the bones when they do not bear weight

Canes, Crutches, and Walkers

Canes, crutches, and walkers can be used with or

without orthoses to normalize gait pattern, reduce
energy expenditure, and enhance balance, safety,
and mobility. These aids can be considered
extensions of the upper limbs; therefore, the
maintenance of upper limb strength and range of
motion can prolong their use

Name: Wheel Chair

Purposes:
1. Increased independence

2. Mobility

3. Socialization

the knees, hips and ankles.

4. Ambulation stimulates circulation which can help stop the development of stroke-causing blood clots.
5. The gastrointestinal, genitourinary, pulmonary and urinary tract functions are all improved by walking

Q5. Reasons the client may need assistance in ambulating?

1. Client have been ill or are recovering from an injury or surgery may need help with walking.
2. Client may have decreased muscle strength or a change in his center of gravity or posture.
3. Client need help with ambulation because of a decrease in their sensory perception or impaired balance.
4. Ambulating the client keeps him more active and improves muscle tone and strength in his legs
5. Confusion, medications and distractions can all affect a client’s ability to walk independently.
