disappoint and there’s a very obvious reason for this: it’s powered by Google and Alexa is not.
Thanks to Google’s dominance in search, the IPA is very impressive. From general knowledge to prices of
products or screening times at your local cinema, the Google Assistant is all over it. Alexa, on the other hand, is
powered by Bing and less able to understand natural speech – which, in effect, results in you robotically speaking
to a robot.
Music search
Depending on your set-up, results here may vary. Both units offer the chance to connect to Spotify and therefore
technically have equal offerings. During tests, however, Google Home returned mostly accurate results – even for
the really obscure requests we shouted with smugness. But the echo really seems to struggle here and often
returns alternative tracks. Perhaps Alexa is pushing her own tastes but it’s not really welcome.
If you’re an Amazon Music costumer, you have access to more music. However, in my experience it returns more
live recordings than not. Depending on your tastes this may also be unwelcome.
The verdict
If you’re shopaholicand a Prime customer, Alexa will feel like your real-life assistant. Butif you’re looking for a
reliable know-it-all and a music player with brilliant sound Google Home is for you.
