Hi Edna, this is Marty from the office. I’m calling about the budget proposal for Monday. We will
be making a proposal for this year’s budget to the regional office. However I looked at the
numbers, and they hadn’t been updated properly. They haven’t taken into account the new
projects we will be developing this year. This error is evident in all of the material, including the
slide show presentation. It is now Friday, and I need this fixed, but I don’t have all the relevant
data with me. Please call me back as soon as possible to solve this situation.
Hi Marty, this is Edna. I just looked at the materials, and you are right. The budget proposal has not
been updated and does not include all of the new projects we’ll be developing this year. I called our
project manager and asked him for all the data and he will be sending it to me as soon as possible. I
will change the numbers in the proposal and the presentation myself over the weekend. Everything
should be ready for Monday. I will try to send you a copy of the proposal and the slide show
presentation on Sunday, just to be sure. If there’s anything else, please let me know.

Question 11. Directions: In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be
sure to say as much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you
will have 60 seconds to speak.

Some say that the Internet has improved the way people communicate while others say that the
Internet has had mostly negative effects on communication as people would choose digital
communication over real life. What is your opinion? Give reasons to support your opinion.

I think the Internet has mostly deteriorated the way people communicate with each other. It has caused
social problems as well as problems with the language itself. These days, many people would prefer
chatting on the computer over talking with a person in real life. They make friends online instead of in
the real world. This makes people socially inept and unaccustomed to developing real, meaningful
relationships. Also, I think it’s doing a lot of harm to the language. People are lazy online and develop
abbreviations and don’t mind spelling mistakes. If this continues, I’m afraid that future generations
won’t be able to spell nor make friends in real life.

Hello Maryanne, this is Todd. I’m calling about the conference we’ll be attending next week in
Colorado. We have twenty people in our department flying there to attend the 3 day conference.
The plane tickets have already been purchased, but most of the hotels in the area are already
fully booked. The only hotels available are too expensive and can’t be covered by our budget. I
don’t know what to do. We can’t cancel the tickets and we can’t spend too much money on
accommodations. Please call me and let me know what to do. I’ll be here in the office.

Hi Todd, this is Maryanne returning your call. I’m sorry to hear that most of the hotels in Colorado are
already fully booked. We need to find accommodations for the twenty people in our department
attending the conference without going over the budget. I suggest we go on a waiting list for the hotels,
just in case they have customers cancel. Also, instead of looking at more expensive hotels, try looking
at cheaper motels. I know it’s inconvenient, but we have no choice. I will talk to the members going to
the conference about this situation, and I’m sure they’ll understand. Look up cheaper motels and let
me know what you find.

Question 11. Directions: In this part of the test, you will give your opinion about a specific topic. Be
sure to say as much as you can in the time allowed. You will have 15 seconds to prepare. Then you
will have 60 seconds to speak.

Do you prefer working with people that have the same background and think the same as you or
do you prefer working with people who think differently? Give reasons to support your choice.

I prefer working with people in the same background and who think the same way as me. It leads to
fewer conflicts and we get to finish tasks more efficiently. I’m a student, and I spent two years studying
overseas. When I’m with a group of students from different countries, I find that there are too many
conflicting ideas, and that we spend too much energy arguing and finding the right solutions. But when
I work with students from my country, there are fewer conflicts and we usually agree on what to do. It is
much easier to work with people that think the same way. I know it’s a good idea to work with people to
find creative solutions, but sometimes it is not efficient, and you end up wasting too much time.
