ACC5213: INTEGRATED CASE STUDY
FINAL EXAMINATION: AUGUST 2017 SESSION

Instructions: Answer ALL questions in the answer booklet provided.

Question 1

Prepare a SWOT analysis for McDonald’s and critically discuss ONE (1) main point in each strength,
weakness, opportunity and threat of your list.
(30 marks)

Question 2
McDonald’s had pursued two strategies in its product offerings: One was to offer a simpler menu
and the other is called “Create your taste” by providing customised burgers.

(i) Evaluate the above strategies whether they have resulted in favourable impact on
McDonald’s financial performance.
(15 marks)

(ii) If you are McDonald’s financial controller for the Asian region, recommend TWO (2)
strategies to boost McDonald’s financial performance.
(25 marks)

Question 3
“Experts said a change in the organisational structure from geography-based markets to groups
based on the maturity of their presence in the market and shared characteristics would foster
easier collaboration and enable these markets to use each other’s strategies. Observers said
Easerbrook was trying to make McDonald’s nimbler and quicker and capable of meeting
customers’ expectations. They said turnaround plans suggested that the was cutting down on the
corporate bureaucracy and was giving more authority to local managers.”

Based on the above extract of the case study, McDonald’s plans to decentralise its control and
give more authority to local managers.

a) Evaluate this strategy concerning the benefits of such strategy
