(b) A Chemical Company is currently operating a process line that results

in 1000 barrels per year of a hazardous waste, which it must dispose of
at a cost of $250 per barrel in a hazardous waste landfill. It projects that
this process line will continue to operate for the next 5 years after
which it will be shut down. It is estimated that if the landfill liner were
to rupture, there would be a remediation/cleaning cost of
approximately $300 per barrel of waste. A proposed cleaner
production project, costing $400,000 to construct and $50,000 per year
in operation and maintenance costs, could reduce the amount of wastes
produced by half. Determine whether the Cleaner production project
investment be made? Assume a discount rate of 8 per cent and a
projected landfill liner failure time of 10 years from the present.
