6 Engine management system

fault diagnosis
Note:
The engine trouble warning light comes on for a short time when the ignition is
turned ON. If the light does not come on, check the LED (see Chapter 8).

1 The system incorporates a self-diagnostic function whereby most faults, when they occur, are
identified by a two digit fault code, which is displayed as a series of flashes on the engine trouble
warning light in the instrument cluster after the engine has been stopped. The code(s) is/are stored
in the ECU memory until a deletion operation is performed (see Step 5). In the case of a minor fault
in the system, the warning light will come on and stay on and the engine will continue to run, and
can be restarted, enabling the machine to be ridden, although performance will be affected. In the
case of a major fault the warning light will flash while the start switch is being pressed, or if already
running the engine will stop and not be able to be restarted – this applies to fault codes 12, 19, 30,
33, 39, 41 and 50 (refer to the accompanying table). If a fault code is displayed refer to the table to
identify the faulty component and the appropriate diagnostic code (where given). If a diagnostic
code is given and if the diagnostic tool is available you can use the tool to assess the function of the
sensor or actuator concerned (see Step 3). If a diagnostic code is not given for a particular fault code
(e.g. 12), refer to Section 7and check the component as described. Certain faults will not activate
the warning light and are not subject to a fault code, but have a related diagnostic code. If the
engine does not run correctly but no warning light and fault code are shown, check the diagnostic
code and details given in the table that relate to the fault, then use the diagnostic mode of the tool to
assess the function of the sensor or actuator concerned. If the diagnostic tool is not available just
use the details given in the table and the relevant procedure(s) in Section 7, or if necessary take the
bike to a Yamaha dealer equipped with the tool. If the system as a whole rather than just an
individual component does not seem to function, refer to Chapter 8and check the fuses and the
starter circuit cut-off relay.

2 A ll fault codes are displayed as a series of flashes of the engine trouble warning light . The first
number of any code is indicated by long (1 second) flashes with 1.5 second intervals, the number of
flashes representing the number of the code. The second number of any code is indicated by short
(0.5 second) flashes with 0.5 second intervals, the number of flashes representing the number of the
code. For example fault code 15 comprises one long flash and five short flashes, and fault code 43
comprises four long flashes and three short flashes. If there is more than one code the lowest
number is indicated first, with a 3 second gap between numbers. Make a note of the number
displayed, then use Table 1 to identify the faulty component and the appropriate diagnostic code
(where given). If a diagnostic code is not given for a particular fault code (i.e. 12 and 46), refer to

Section 7and check the component as described.

3 If a diagnostic code is given, and you have the Yamaha diagnostic tool (part No. 90890-03182),
connect the tool and set it to diagnostic mode as follows: make sure the ignition switch is OFF and
set the kill switch to RUN. Remove the rider’s seat (see Chapter 7). Disconnect the self-diagnosis
wiring connector – it is a single bullet connector with a yellow/green wire (see illustration) .
Connect the diagnostic tool according to the instructions supplied. Disconnect the fuel pump wiring
connector (see illustration 2.4) . Press and hold the MODE button on the tool, then turn the
ignition switch ON. DIAG will be displayed on the tool and the LED should be green – if CO is
displayed press the UP button to change to DIAG. Confirm the selection by pressing the MODE
button. Use the UP or DOWN button to find the appropriate diagnostic code on the display. The UP
button displays the code numbers in ascending order, the DOWN button displays the numbers in
descending order. In the case of a sensor related diagnostic code the appropriate sensor test
specifications are displayed. Compare the diagnostic code with Table 2 to identify the test action
required. Compare the test results to any data displayed on the meter for that diagnostic code. In
the case of an actuator related diagnostic code press the mode button to test the actuator relevant to
the code displayed. To cancel the diagnostic mode, turn the ignition switch OFF. Disconnect the tool
and reconnect the self-diagnosis wiring connector.

4 Once the fault has been corrected, confirm that the fault code is no longer displayed by turning
the ignition switch OFF and then ON again. If the code is no longer displayed the repair is complete.

5 To delete the fault code from the ECU memory, follow the procedure in Step 3 to set-up the
diagnostic mode, then enter code 62. The total number of stored codes will be displayed (00 to 16).
Pres the MODE button to delete the stored codes – the display should then show 00.
