Introduction
This Lab has the aim of applying the basic steps, procedures and planning initiatives required to take
place in order to create a computer network. This assignment follows the scenario below requiring
students to apply skills learnt over the past 6 weeks of this unit with regards to the creation of a
computer network for a client.

“Pacific TAFE wants to make a new lab for their ever growing students. The lab needs to have 20
wired computers and a station for 5 wireless devices. It would also need to have network printer in
the lab.”

Step 1: Evaluation of Client Needs

To begin there are 3 obvious requirements made by the client. The presence of 20 computers
physically wired to the network, 5 wireless devices (as well as stations for said wireless devices) and
the need of a network printer. Further analysis has brought to light the need for the following:

 2x24 port switch is required in order to connect/wire all devices to the same network
 Wireless access point to allow wireless devices to connect to the network
 A computer rack for a computer lab router to enable access to the internet and other
network-network services
 Desktop locks to prevent theft of computer hardware
 The need for an ergonomic layout which allows the easy flow of students in and out of the
lab
 Computer software (OS: Windows 7 or Windows 10) that provide basic functions such as
web surfing for research and Moodle access, basic Microsoft applications i.e. Excel,
PowerPoint, Word, Access and so forth

Further to this some assumptions were made. These include the existing presence of a backend AD
server for authentication, presence of a Core Switch along with the assumption that this particular
project is just to extend a pre-existing network thus creating a new subnet.

Step 4: Advanced Installation Plan

Methodology
Before proceeding with this project, approval from management needs to be obtained. After the
project has been approved then implementation will begin. To increase efficiency a number of tasks
will run in parallel, these are: cabling, subnet configuration and computer software test deployment

With regards to the computer software test deployment two computer desktops will be set up to
test software deployment.

Once the software deployment has proven successful during the test that deployment process will
be used to install software on the remaining desktops after cabling and hardware have been
installed/setup.

Once everything has been installed and configured the computer lab will be opened for use.

Time Frame
Once purchasing and shipping has been completed then the minimal timeframe should be 7-12 days.
Planning, subnet configuration and software test deployment will be completed before (at least 2
weeks in advanced) the installation of cabling and hardware.

Conclusion
In conclusion this assignment thoroughly covers and explains the client’s needs, the floorplan, the
purchasing of hardware and the advanced installation plan of this project requested upon by the
client.

All decisions made were done so while keeping feasibility and efficiency in mind.
