An Eyebrow-Raising Reputation

President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines has a bit of a reputation.

The global community has come to know the Philippine's 16th president as a man of
contentious quips and often offensive quotes.

But while Duterte has been the inspiration for protest marches against the death penalty
and his war on drugs, the leader has also won favor with some Filipinos, who support
his anti-drug crackdown.

A recent phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump catapulted Duterte back
into American headlines after the contents of the conversation were leaked and
published.

In the call, Trump praised Duterte for his prosecution of the Philippines' drug war, which
has allegedly involved extrajudicial death squads and resulted in the thousands of
executions.

Trump sparked controversy with his private praise for the leader, who has at times
drawn negative attention for his public comments.
