Dance in theory form, is based on many ancient literature like Natyasastra

(Original - 300 A.D. Telugu version – Shri P S R Apparao garu1st edition in 1958-

59, English – in 1950-1956 by Shri Man Mohan Gosh garu, Royal Asiatic society of

Bengal, Calcutta. Now I am referring to Nātyaśāstra of Bharatamuni Sanskrit,

Romanized text with commentary of Abhinavbhāratī, English translation, notes and

index edited by Shri Pushpendra Kumar garu). In Natyasastra, Bharatamuni total

content is divided into 36 chapters where he explained Anga, Upanga and

Pratyangas in Chapter 8-10 which are linked with Caris explained in chapter 11.

Abhinayadarpana of Nandikeswara (From the story contained in

Abhinayadarpanam, Abhinayadarpanam seems to be abridged version of

Bharatarnavam book written by Nandikeshwara Tanjavore Saraswati Mahal library

published in 1957, Telugu and english translation by Shri P S R Apparao garu in

1987 and 1997 respectively). In Abhinayadarpana, total content is divided into 16

chapters in Telugu version and chapters 12 explain Sthanakas, chapter 14

explains Caris. In English version, Shri P S R Apparao garu has divided same

chapters in 31. According to English version, Sthanakas are in 23rd chapter and 26th

chapter explains Caris.

Sangita Ratnakaram written by Sārṅgadeva (In Yadava dynasty who ruled in

Deogiri modern Doulatabad 1210-1247 A.D). In Sangita Ratnakaram, according to

Sārṅgadeva, the total content is divided in 7 chapters. 7th chapter deals with Nritya.

In this he explained Desi Caris, Desi Sthanakas. In Neo Desi Karanas of Smt

Sundari Sanathanam garu, she translated to English version of desi Sthanakas and

desi caris and desi Karanas in 2013.

Nritta Ratnavali of Jayapasena (Sanskrit version - written by Jayapasena,

Venugopala Rao garu, 2013). In Nritta Ratnavali of Jayapasena, total content is

divided into 8 chapters where he explained Caris and Sthanakas (Marga) in 3rd

chapter and Desi Sthanakas are in 5th chapter, Desi Caris in 6th chapter in Telugu

and English translations by Shri Ralapalli Anantha Krishna Sarma garu and Dr

Pappu Venugopala garu respectively.
