2 Varsoli Beach

Versoli is situated on the outskirts of
Alibaug, about 2 km to the north of Alibaug
Beach. It’s a lovely walk through green lanes
to Versoli. From the beach, you can see the
Kolaba Fort and also two other smaller forts
— Khanderi and Underi. Both these forts
were built in the late 17th century. You can
hire a local boat from Kihim or Thal to visit
these forts.
3 Alibag Fort

An island during the high waters,
the 17th-century Alibag Fort is
accessible by foot when the tide is
low. In its heyday, the fort had a five-
storey palace, apparently built by a
younger relative, Raghoji Angre, in the
18th century. The geo-magnetic
observatory, built in 1905, is a good
digression from history. The
construction of the fort was started by
Shivaji in the 1680s. 
The entire edifice is 900 ft long, 350 ft wide
and has 25-foot-high walls with 17 bastions.
The fort has many shrines, the most
important being the 18th-century temple
Ganesh Panchayatan. Next to it is a sweet
water well that must have been an asset
during sieges. From the black sands
of Alibaug to the white sands of
Kashid, this part of the western coast
of India has plenty of beaches. Ask
the locals for the danger zones before
venturing out into the sea.
4 Alibag beach

The main beach of the town, it is a flat
stretch that is reasonably clean and has thin
crowds during the week. The sand has a
hard texture and is a shade black. The water
rushes against the concrete embankment
that separates the sea and the many thelas
of nariyal pani, bhel puri and kulfi. As the
water begins to recede, the embankment
reveals its stairs looking out to the ocean
and the spread of black sand beneath. In
the evening, horse-driven buggies offer
rides, and the vendors move across the
embankment to sell their stuff on the beach.
