Module #1

The document discusses the concept of porosity and porous versus non-porous materials. It defines porosity as a property that allows materials to absorb liquids like water. Porous materials have spaces that can hold liquid, while non-porous materials like metal and plastic do not absorb water. Examples are given of porous materials like paper, cloth, and sponges. Readers are prompted to do an experiment to observe which materials absorb water. The results are recorded in a table separating porous and non-porous materials. In conclusion, porous materials absorb water due to having spaces, while diapers absorb liquid due to super absorbent polymers.

Lesson 1

Porosity
Porosity is a property of material that let its absorb water and
other liquids.
Some materials like paper and cloth can absorb liquid well. The
materials are porous in nature. Porous materials have plenty of
spaces inside where liquid can be absorbed. Materials with this
property enable us to easily do some household chores such as
cleaning and washing dishes.
On the other hand, materials such as metal and plastic cannot
absorb water. They are non porous materials.
