Table 1. Materials that Absorb Water and Materials that Do Not Absorb Water
Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. It is made up of many tiny
particles called atoms.
Matter has three states – solid, liquid and gas.
Solid have definite size, shape and volume.
Liquid have definite volume and they flow. They take the shape of the container.
Gases have no definite shape and volume. You cannot see them but you can feel
them.
Absorb – to take in (something such as liquid)
Porous – having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.
Porosity – property of materials that refers to the ability to hold or absorb water.
Porous materials are materials that allow liquid or air to pass through.
Non-porous materials are materials that does not allow liquid or air to pass through.
Absorbent/porous materials are good for drying and wiping liquids.
Materials that do not absorb water are non-absorbent or waterproof materials,
examples are raincoats, umbrella, eating utensils among others.
Let’s Practice What We Learn!
Given are the materials in the drawing. Classify the materials according to their
ability to absorb water. Write porous if it absorbs water and non-porous if it
does not.
