Overview

Everything in this world is matter. It is found around you in different forms.

Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass and volume. You will find
out the answer to this question as you go through this module.

Let’s Check it Out

I know that you are already excited to get started. Let us answer the
following. Check the picture of the objects that absorb water.

1. tissue 2. blouses 3. plastic

4. cotton 5. umbrella 6. sock

Well, how was the test?

Don’t worry about your score. That means, this module is for you.
Designed for you to understand all about the properties of matter. So, what are
you waiting for? Start your journey.
Let’s Learn This

At the end of the module, you will be able to:

 Describe materials based on the ability to absorb water.

 Classify materials based on the ability to absorb water.
(S4MT-Ia-1, First Quarter, Matter)

Let us Learn

There are different materials in our environment that can be classified

according to their properties. They can be classified based on their ability to
absorb water.
Materials having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through. Holes
enable or allow the materials to absorb water or liquid. The examples are cotton,
towels, fabric, tissue paper and sponge.

Let’s Try

Do this Activity!

“Which Materials Absorb Water and Which Do Not?

What you need:

Basin of water, dropper, tray, cotton balls, rubber ball, face towel, rag,
tissue paper, plastic bag, plastic toy
What to do:

1. Put all the materials on the table.

2. Write all your observations on the table below.
3. Fill the basin with water.
4. Dip the cloth in the basin of water for 30 seconds.
5. Observe its characteristics and write your observation on the table below.
6. Repeat procedures 4 and 5 using the following: rubber ball, cotton balls, face
towel, rag, tissue paper, plastic bag, and plastic toy.Record your
observations on the table below.
7. Lift up the material and squeeze. Does the water coming out? Is the material
heavier when wet?
8. After observing all the materials, clean up the area.

Guide Questions:

OOOPSS, Don’t Forget!

 Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass. It is made up of many tiny
particles called atoms.
 Matter has three states – solid, liquid and gas.
 Solid have definite size, shape and volume.
 Liquid have definite volume and they flow. They take the shape of the container.
 Gases have no definite shape and volume. You cannot see them but you can feel
them.
 Absorb – to take in (something such as liquid)
 Porous – having small holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.
 Porosity – property of materials that refers to the ability to hold or absorb water.
 Porous materials are materials that allow liquid or air to pass through.
 Non-porous materials are materials that does not allow liquid or air to pass through.
 Absorbent/porous materials are good for drying and wiping liquids.
 Materials that do not absorb water are non-absorbent or waterproof materials,
examples are raincoats, umbrella, eating utensils among others.
Let’s Practice What We Learn!

Given are the materials in the drawing. Classify the materials according to their
ability to absorb water. Write porous if it absorbs water and non-porous if it
does not.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5.

Done?

Check your work based on the given answer at the end of this module.

Let’s Practice More!

Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which refers to anything that occupies space and has weight?
a. Solid b. Matter c. liquid d. gas
2. What is the property of matter that has the ability to absorb water?
a. Mass b. Absorb c. Porosity d. Weight
3. Which of the following materials can absorb water most?
a. Cotton b. Plastic c. Glass d. Wood
4. It allow liquid or air to pass through it.
a. Non-porous b. liquid c. solid d. porous
5. All matter is made up of tiny particles called ___________.
a. Molecules b. atom c. plasma d. holes
Challenge!

1. Why would some people prefer to use plastic bag than a paper bag?
2. During rainy days, what kind of material are you going to use to prevent
you from getting wet? Explain why?
3. Research what is inside a baby’s diaper that can absorb urine.
