A Semi- Detailed Lesson Plan for Classroom Observation

School : Maglipay Elem. School Grade : Four

Teacher : Dindi N. Adlao Quarter :I
Subject : Science Date
Week : 1 Day :1

I. Objectives
Learning 1. Classify materials based on their ability to absorb water;
Competencies 2. Describe materials based on their ability to absorb water;
Integration Value: Wearing appropriate clothes according to seasons and
weathers
II. Content
A. Topic Lesson 1 – Materials that absorb water
B. Learning
Resources
C. Teacher’s
Guide
D. Learner’s Q1_Science 4_ Module 1 pp. 4 – 10.
Material
E. Other
resources
III. Procedures Teacher’s Activity
A. Review Ask: What are the three state of matter?
Do: Identify the following materials as to solid, liquid or gas.
1. ball pen
2. ball
3. water
4. cotton
5. rug
B. Motivation Say: There are different materials found in the community,
and each material possesses different properties. Using the
letters of alphabet, decode the numbers to get the different
words related to this day’s lesson
1.

2.

3.

4.

- Good job! You got it right! You will learn in this lesson
the meaning of the decoded words.

C. Activity - Say: This time we will perform an activity. I want you to

observe, listen as we do this.
- Do: Show all the materials: rubber ball, water, glass,
rug, face towel, basin/pail, plastic bottle, cotton
- Say: First, I will put water in a basin/pail. Next, I will
put the materials one by one in the basin of water/pail
of water for few seconds and observe what will happen.
Observe each material once taken out of the bowl.
(Group the materials into two as you take them out.)

D. Analysis Questions:
1. Based on the activity, what can you say about these two
groups of materials?
2. Did they take some of the water in or absorb water? Why?
What made them take some of the water in/absorb water?
3. How about the other group, did the materials take some
water in or do not absorb water? Why not?
3. Did all of the materials absorb water? Which of them did
not absorb water?
4. Which of the materials absorbed water? How did it absorb
water?

E. Abstraction Say: There are different materials in our environment that

can be classified based on their ability to absorb water more
than
the others.
- Absorb means to take in (something, such as liquid) in a
natural or gradual way. Paper, cardboard, sponges,
pumice stones, untreated wood, and cork are a few
examples of porous materials.
- Porous materials have small holes that allow air or
liquid to pass through.
- These materials may also be called absorbent materials.
- On the other hand, non-porous materials do not allow
air or liquid to pass through. They may also be called
nonabsorbent materials. An example of which are hard-
surfaced substances like stainless steel, hard covering,
and rigid synthetic elements or substances like plastics
and rubbers.

F. Applicatio Direction: Encircle the things that you can use during rainy
n season.

Ask: Why is it that you use these things during rainy days?
IV. Evaluation A. Write true if the statement is correct. If the statement is
false change the underlined word/s with porous, nonporous,
absorb or does not absorb. Do this in your Science
notebook.

_____1. Plastics are porous materials.

_____2. Non-porous materials are materials having small
holes that allow air or water to pass through.
_____3. Cotton is a porous material.
_____4. Materials made out of cloth do not absorb water.
_____5. Wood is a material that absorbs water.

B. Directions: Write A for absorbent if the materials absorb

water and NA for non-absorbent, if the materials do not
absorb water.
_____ 1. rubber ball ____ 6. cloth _____ 2.
plastic bag ____ 7. manila paper _____ 3. blanket
____ 8. handkerchief _____ 4. Paper ____ 9. rug
_____ 5. plastic bottle ____ 10. Sponge
