Detailed Lesson Plan

Grade 4 Chapter 1 Lesson 1

Materials that Absorb Water

Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of grouping different materials based on their
properties.

Performance Standard:
The learners should be able to recognize and practice proper handling of products.

I. Objectives:

Learning Competency:
The learners should be able to classify materials based on the ability to absorb water,
float, sink and undergo decay.
Code: S4MT-la-1
Learning Target:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
 Describe and classify materials based on the ability to absorb water

II. Content:

Main Content: Properties of Matter

Sub-Content: Materials that Absorb Water

III. Learning Resources:

A. References:
Learner’s module
Curriculum Guide
B. Other Learning Resources:
Laptop
Projector

IV. Procedure

1. Before the Lesson

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. Preparatory Activities

Okay class, may we all stand for a prayer.

Sam, kindly lead the prayer.

Good morning, class! Good morning, ma’am!

You may now take your seat. Thank you, ma’am!

Before we proceed on our topic for today. ( Checking the attendance )

Let me check your attendance first. As I call
on your name say present.

Okay, very good! Everyone is present today.

B. Learning Cycle
B.1. Elicit

Do you still remember our topic last Yes, ma’am! The different properties of
meeting? matter.
These are the solid, liquid, and gas, ma’am!
Can you state what are the different
properties of matter?
Very good!

B.2 Engage

Now, I will show you different pictures then

write down on your notebooks if this is solid,
liquid or gas.
Ma’am, solid are the ones that are firm and
has three dimensions, while liquid is
substance that flows freely and lastly, gas are
the ones with no exact shape and no exact
volume.

Base on the pictures I’ve showed you what is

the difference between solid, liquid, and gas?

Very good!
Our lesson for today is about materials that
absorb water.

I will present to you a power point

presentation about the content of our lesson. ( the students will do some experimentation)
I require you all to listen and focus so you
understand what will I be going to discuss.

2. During the Lesson

B.3 Explore

Okay, I have here a piece of paper and a

bottled water. I will soak the paper into the
water. I will be going to group you into four.
Then, you will be going to tell me your group
observation on the experiment we will be
going to conduct. The material was round, thick and soft. It
disappeared and the material got wet.
B.4 Explain

Let’s find what are your observations on the

experiment.
Let us hear from the first group.

What was the characteristic of the material

before placing it in the water?

Very good!

As we soak the paper in to the water the The water dripped and when we take out
paper loses its hydrogen bonds holding the materials, we can still see the water.
cellulous fibers that causes it to break down.
This is because water molecules consist of
oxygen and hydrogen atoms, which form
hydrogen bonds with cellulose fibers, thus
weakening their own hydrogen bonds in the
process.
Yes, ma’am! Water comes out to the wet
How about the next group? When we added paper when we squeezed it.
water to the material what happened to the
water or to the material?

That’s right!

Tough it may not be clear as we first saw it. ( Answer varies )

When you lifted the material and squeezed it,

did the water come out? Did the material
come out?

That’s right again! It is because it absorbs the

water the moment, we dip it.

Is the material heavier when wet?

Very good! It becomes heavier because of the

water it absorbed.
Paper bags easily get wet than plastic bag, a
B.5 Elaborate non-porous material which does not allow to
pass through.

Now, we just discussed the different material

that absorbs water. I will ask some questions We need to use raincoats to prevent us from
regarding on our lesson. Explain your answers getting wet. Plastic raincoats do not absorb
briefly. water. Plastic does not allow water to pass
through.
Why would some people prefer to use plastic
bag than a paper bag?

Very good!

During rainy days, what kind of materials are

you going to use to prevent you from getting
wet?

That’s right! As I can see you can now easily

determine the materials that absorb water to
materials that are not.

3. After the Lesson

Some of the materials absorb water more

than others. Cotton is very porous, which
makes it a natural absorber of water.

Porous material are materials having small

holes that allow air or liquid to pass through.

B.6 Evaluate
Describe the following materials based on the
ability to absorb water.

( The students will write their answers on a

one whole sheet of pad paper )

( Students will find material inside the

classroom and will so as instructed)
B.7 Extend

Go around the classroom. Collect at least 5

materials and test them as to whether or not
the materials absorb water.

V. Remarks:
The lesson was successfully delivered as planned. The new lesson will be
taught next meeting.

VI. Reflection:
The students are cooperating during the discussion and it made lesson
easier to teach. The topic I have prepared was successfully delivered on time.
Closure:
We never know the worth of water till the well is dry.
