The Green Revolution: Helpful or Harmful.

Step 1. Watch the following video, The Green Revolution: Waging A War Against Hunger, and
take notes on the causes, methods, benefits and unexpected consequences of the Green
Revolution.
Causes  The exponentially growing world population was predicted to go past 6 billion people, by
the 21st century. Agriculture was not on track to being able to grown enough to support
that many people, so there needed to be huge growth in agriculture.

Methods  Used biotechnology in the form of genetically modified organisms that made farming
cheaper and easier. And new agricultural techniques that also made it easier.

Locations  Mexico, India, Pakistan, China, South Vietnam, Brazil, Turkey

Effects  Farmers were able to produce food easier and more efficiently. This led to increased
income for farmers which then gave them access to newer technology. The newer
technology made farming more reliable and safer, and allowed countries to become self
sufficient. Overall agricultural production increased and helped modernize agriculture.

Helped to bring millions out of hunger around the world

Unexpected  The long term effects of the chemicals in pesticides and fertilizers raise concerns.
Consequences
The large amount of irrigation required caused water to be used for agriculture, and not
as drinking water. The irrigation methods also caused pesticides to runoff into the
ecosystem in some cases, and in others, it used a lot of water because of the poor soil
quality
