Final “-s” is pronounced /s/ after:

/p/, /t/, /f/, /k/, and /th/. students, books, desks, cats

/Z/

Final “-s” is pronounced /z/ after:

/b/, /d/, /g/, /v/, /m/, /n/, /l/, /r/, beds, rooms, lives, dogs
and vowels (a, e, i, o, u).

IZ/

Final “-es” is pronounced /IZ/


after:

“-s” sounds classes, faces


“-z” sounds exercises, sizes
“-sh” sounds dishes, wishes
“-ch” sounds sandwiches, watches
“-ge / dge” sounds. colleges, pages
“x” sounds faxes, taxes
This adds an extra syllable to the
noun.
