QUESTIONS
1. What problem does the topic sentence introduce?
- Martyn Poliakoff must present ideas to explain green chemistry to the students and teachers at
Wachamo Comprehensive High School in Hossana.
2. What is the proposed solution? According to the paragraph, what is it a good solution? Give details.
- The solution was to use an example of a plastic bag that he got two days earlier at the town’s
market. Fortunately, it was a good solution because they make bags like these from petroleum
but, from other countries, because in Ethiopia there is not much petroleum. Also, he explained
that if people there made the bags from sugarcane or oil, then Ethiopia would not have to buy its
bags from other countries.
3. What is the conclusion? How is it connected to the topic sentence?
- Making bags from sugarcane needs new chemistry, it needs green chemistry. They are
connected with respect to how ideas are explained to make use of green chemistry.
4. What is your opinion about Poliakoff’s solution? Do you think it is a good one? Why or why not?
- Personally speaking, we think it’s a good solution, because it's great how with simple examples
it was possible to explain the goal of green chemistry and what happens if you create oil-based
plastic bags, for example. Also, thinking of the animals, the cows could eat the bags used in the
street instead of hurting themselves.

PARAGRAPH
Pollution in general is one of the main problems in Peru. The environment works like a
chain, which makes pollution in Peru lead to other ones like air and water pollution, soil
erosion and pollution, and the most concerned deforestation in the Amazon. Air
pollution is a problem, especially in Lima, due to industrial and vehicle emissions.
Peruvians are worried about carbon dioxide emissions from industrial sources. Water
pollution is another of Peru's environmental concerns. Its sources are industrial waste,
sewage, and oil-related waste. The nation has 1,746 km of renewable water resources
with 86% used to support farming and 7% used for industrial activity. Only 87% percent
of city dwellers and 62% of the rural population have access to pure drinking water. The
nation's cities produce about 3 million tons of solid waste per year. Soil erosion has
resulted from overgrazing on the slopes of the costa and sierra. One way to solve these
problems is to create public organizations in charge of protecting the Web of Life in Peru.
Society needs eyes where we cannot see what private companies make with our natural
resources. Promote safe tourism can improve the care of the Peruvian government in
making projects to protect and help the environment.
