INTRODUCTION
Background:
The advocates want to pursue a campaign of helping in preserving the environment. It
was the first week of March 2022 where Brgy. Malinao and Union in Siargao proposed a
construction of the Union-Malinao Bridge. The said issue is basically about the barangays’ plan
to construct a bridge that will definitely destroy and affect the preserved natural beauty of
Siargao (Secret Beach). Not just the beach will be affected but also the mangroves, sea grass,
and the community in that area. As a possible result in this construction, the locals, their
homes, and their livelihood will be affected because of this bridge. Siargao is also known for
having a unique, raw, and natural beauty. This beautiful nature must be preserved.
Improvement does not always need to pour concrete and destroy something.
The researchers would like to tackle these kinds of issues where we should preserve and
protect the environment and the community. It is our responsibility and discipline to help in
spreading awareness to people, especially, to the authorities that it is good for the country to
have an improvement but not in the way of affecting the environment and its locals.
Rationale:
The beaches on Siargao island have been one of the most attractive and most visited
tourist attractions in the Philippines. With the proposed construction of the Union-Malinao
Bridge by the Brgy. Malinao and a Union, there will be grave repercussions to the natural
environment and its community, hence, the advocates aspire to protect the raw beauty of
Siargao and its residents. YEP! (Youth for Environment Preservation), the group’s Multimodal
Advocacy Campaign is for the preservation of the “Surfing Capital of the Philippines'', Siargao.
Through the group’s campaign activities, society will be aware of the situation and gain support
to defend the biodiversity of Siargao. Also, the public will be encouraged to practice the 3R’s
(Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) by creating sustainable Do-It-Yourself crafts. Lastly, artists and local

sellers that have the same advocacy with the team will gain acknowledgment and fulfill their
purpose.
DISCUSSION
Multimodality
The group’s Advocacy Campaign will be multimodal through conducting activities that
incorporate the different semiotic systems. The first and third activities which are establishing
DIY crafts and fundraising activities such as concerts and selling of eco-friendly products will
make use of all modes — linguistic, visual, aural, spatial, and gestural modes. These activities
will not only employ publication materials that use the first four modes but also include
interaction between people. While the second activity which is posting content will utilize
linguistic, visual, and spatial modes. The focus of this activity will be posting visual
representations that will creatively raise awareness of the issue.
Advocacy:
Through the different environmental concerns that the advocates have witnessed and
encountered, the team have discovered that the environmental issues that we are currently
facing are the poor implementation of ecological solid waste management, lack of people's
environmental awareness and action, and our country's poor state of irrigation system. A lot of
research studies have also demonstrated the causes of these environmental problems.
According to Atienza (2011), the reason why waste management has become a major problem
in the Philippines is because of the rapid population growth, urbanization, and modernization in
the country. Furthermore, an article entitled “Philippines Agriculture Saddled by Poor Irrigation
Systems" (2018) stated that our country's current irrigation system has a great impact not only
on the livelihood of our farmers but also on our environment because of its high water
consumption. This is why it is very important to be aware of these environmental problems
because these mostly affect our vulnerable communities, such as our local farmers. With the
projects we have formed, we will be able to further identify the root of these problems and
help eliminate their detrimental effects.
In an attempt to get the public more involved and knowledgeable in the worries and
issues of our environment and agriculture, the group advocates for environmental
preservation. The team’s advocacy aims to create awareness regarding environmental activities
that can be easily done at home. Our advocacy not only strives to spread awareness but also
tries to get involved with real people and try to help in any way we can. In our environmental
advocacy, the group aims to establish projects and help minimize the environmental problems
that are tremendously prevalent today.
Campaign:
The advocates will work hand-in-hand to make the campaign possible. Mr. Mariano will be in
charge of contacting the resource personnel and prepare the materials needed. Ms. Escanilla
will be in charge of handling the publication materials that the team will produce. Ms. Ramos
will also be helping in the publication materials and overseeing the whole group. As for the
budget, the team estimated that they will only need 500.00 pesos coming from their own
pocket for the first activity which is doing eco-friendly crafts. The group will not be needing
much money because the group will also conduct a fundraiser activities which will be concert
for a cause and inviting of local shops. The publication materials will also be posted in social
media platforms.
The team chose three activities that are feasible and will help achieve our main objective which
is to preserve the environment:
 Establishing DIY Crafts & Environment Friendly Activities - This promotes and teaches
the importance of the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) by encouraging people to do
simple and creative activities that can help the environment. Crafting & practicing the 3
R's will be the main focus of this activity. Through online platforms, we will post step-by-
step tutorials on how to make sustainable DIY Environmental crafts/activity. This activity
is important since its contribution and extending the useful life of materials and it’ll help
by reducing the amount of waste generated.
 Posting in Social media platforms to raise Awareness - According to Rogers (2018),

social media is the perfect global platform to promote the protection of our
environment and biodiversity by serving as an eyeopener to help people become aware
of different environmental problems. We strongly believe that by using these social
media platforms as a way to reach other people, we can help them and raise their
environmental awareness. We are going to post facts & trivia, daily reminders, activities,
and information that can help people to become aware of our environmental issues.
Also, since this aims to spread environmental awareness by posting in social media with
visually appealing design and format which will attract the viewers, not only they’ll learn
but they’ll also be entertained at the same time by reading the posts. By engaging and
reaching out to people through social media platforms, we can achieve our goal to
contribute to the environment.
 Fundraising Activity - In this activity, we will organize events to raise money in order to
help the local community. We will invite local shops that sell eco-friendly products,
environmental advocates and arrange a local artists’ concert for a cause. This
fundraising campaign will encourage people to improve its environment instead of
building unnecessary and harmful constructions that can destroy our environment such
as the construction of the Union-Malinao bridge in Siargao. The construction of the said
bridge can potentially disrupt the natural habitats of living species.
CONCLUSION
The message and the main purpose of this study is to help and spread awareness in
preservation of our environment. It is our duty and responsibility to protect the environment
we are all living in. Yes, everyone wants enhancement or improvements but in this kind of way,
we could all think of better options by not affecting the environment and its locals. As college
students, we want to help in preserving the unique beauty our country has. In this way, the
group is able to promote the beautiful destinations here in our country. The advocates want to
encourage everyone, especially, the youth who are in the same age range like us to help in
spreading this kind of campaign wherein we should educate our fellow citizens and encourage
them to help in preserving the environment we have. The Philippines is also known for its
tourism by having beautiful destinations, we must protect it. Especially now that we have
threats because of the lack of fossil fuels that has a huge bad impact on the whole planet. Let us
all help in spreading awareness and act as one in helping our environment and preserve it. This
study will give knowledge to people on how to start in helping preserve the environment. The
group did some research and studied these kinds of issues that need to be solved and it is our
responsibility to encourage people to do the same thing and be united in helping our nature to
have its own peace and beauty.
