Abstract

Earth is our home; our source of food and shelter. It lived billions of years from

now. People lived by taking care and developing its environment. After hundreds of

years, its beauty was conquered by the uprising amount of garbage. Garbage is already a

common problem in the Philippines. It has always been a major issue in many parts of the

country. Unfortunately, Philippines produce more waste together with the consistent

increasing of its population. Many have attempted to make a change, even the

government, but there’s seems to be something wrong. Therefore, researchers from Our

Lady of Fatima University-Quezon City decided to make a move towards this

retrograding issue and help in spreading awareness. The said university has also an issue

when it comes to garbage disposal and discipline of its students.

The researchers first asked permission to collect plastic trash in food stalls near

the university so that they'll be aware of the research and its advocacy; encouraging them

to also cooperate and start small. Rounding the streets of the university, they have

collected a large amount of wastes. After collecting multiples of wastes, mostly plastics

and bottles, these were sold to a certain junk shop. The funds collected were used to buy

seeds and plant these around the campus to increase vegetation.

With their plan, they aim to encourage the community to practice and promote

proper waste management. Every individual must have the discipline of throwing its

garbage in their respective places; also the willingness to protect people's health and the

environment. The action taken is supposed to reduce the waste that is surrounding the

university's campus.

i
The cost of this project is affordable and worth it. Seeds cost at least 20-70 pesos.

It can be a hassle in selling the collected trash. Other branches of junk shops only accept

limited categories of trash like plastics and metals.

Becoming aware of our surroundings will be a big help for our mother earth. The

earth is currently dying thanks to the help of humans. Everyone can be a step forward in

reviving it again. Garbage will always be present but it can have a solution and it is up to

people if we'll make a move to start it.

Introduction

In the present day, the use of single use of plastics is common in greatest number

of companies running around the globe. Most consumers are not educated enough to

dispose wastes in a proper way. Wastes are being thrown in landfills which affect the soil

and natural micro-organisms from being healthy. They are more likely to vanish and

become extinct. Due to wastes’ bacteria, diseases spread quickly to individuals near the

landfills. These can cause them to get skin diseases, hepatitis, chemical poisoning, etc. As

a consequence of improper waste disposal, majority of wastes are being dumped into the

oceans and other places. Sea animals digest wastes and corals takes in chemicals due to

masses of non-biodegradable wastes that don’t receive any attention at all from the

people and the authorities.

Improper waste disposal is affecting many living organisms and numerous

amounts of people. The researchers conducted a study on how to control and benefit from

the wastes scattered around Our Lady of Fatima University – Quezon City Campus. They

have thought that it will be beneficial to segregate wastes into three bins, biodegradable,

non-biodegradable, and recyclables. Some will be composted and some will be sold. The

money will be use to buys seeds which will be planted to places with low vegetation.

This research aims for progress around Our Lady of Fatima University – Quezon

City Campus and to the people near the community. Wastes will be put to good use and

improper waste disposal will be reduced. Factors will be measured and analyzed as to

how these will change with each solution to its conflict.

Body

From the very start, humans are considered to be one of the great factors that

affect the environment negatively. Just with the human acts like littering, cutting down of

trees, inhumane treatment to animals, and the like, problems are likely to occur. It is very

alarming to see how the world reacts to every negative decisions and actions that people

make. Drastic changes are observable and these are not good things to hear or read in the

news.

Out of all the issues that the environment is suffering from, the researchers

decided to start small; focusing on the problem that deals with improper waste disposal.

Improper waste disposal is the disposal of waste in a way that has negative consequences

for the environment. Examples of this include littering, hazardous waste dumped into the

ground or in vacant lots, and not recycling items that should be recycled.

Causes of the problem

I. Lack of Discipline. There are already some existing laws to be followed in order

to prevent the problems that a community experiences yet some people just don’t care at

all. There may be rules implemented but not everyone is interested to make an

appropriate move. Change will not always start from the government agencies which are

accountable to such issues. These things require cooperation from the people within the

community itself.
II. Attitude Towards The Environment. A thing connected to lack of discipline is

the bad attitude of humans to their environment. People always make excuses for not

doing what is right. Others have the guts to do things that are destructive to the natural

resources of Earth such as throwing garbage, cutting trees, and more.

III. Lack Of Knowledge Regarding The Issue. There are some people who really

lack when it comes to the latest issues especially about their surroundings. Most of these

were not educated well to understand how every action greatly affects the environment.

IV. Improper Waste Disposal. This is the most common problem among people

around the world. Putting trash in a bin is quite helpful, unless all of the trash were not

segregated. Some recyclables will be put to waste instead of being transformed into a

useful one.

Effects of the problem

I. Flood. Flood, as the main effect of rain, can have a higher chance of occurring

because of garbage. The waste of people, especially the students and several

establishments, can block the drainages where the water should flow.

II. Unpleasant Smell. The odor produced by the trash can cause a distinctive smell

that is unpleasant to the nose. This can bother and cause distraction to the people nearby.

III. Viruses And Diseases. Garbage is the major source of viruses and diseases.

There are different insects and animals that love to interact with different kinds of wastes.

One of the most dangerous and common effect that may happen is to have a Dengue
Fever. Bacteria also spread quickly through air. Bacteria being suspended all along the air

we breathe is quite risky to the health of our respiratory system.

Different solutions to the improper waste disposal

I. Buy Enough Products To Be Used. It is essential to purchase products that are small

in quantity. In this way, people can avoid wasting some of it or be left unused.

II. Composition Of Waste. This is one of the most common solutions to the problem

with waste disposal. It is a great option in reducing wastes. Anything organic such as

food wastes, animal and human wastes, yard wastes, and many more can be composted

below the ground. These wastes will break down into rich composts and can be used for

variety of things.

III. Sell Things That Are Still In Good Condition. A lot of people throw things that

they don’t need or use anymore and it could cause to the piling up of wastes, resulting to

end up in different places. Instead of disposing them, try selling them to either in thrift

shops, garage sales, or even in junk shops. It will be a help not only to people but also to

the environment.

IV. Recycle. If a person has plenty of time, as well as plenty of recyclable wastes, it will

be a smart move to start turning those things to something new and better. It will not just

lessen the waste in the environment but it will also entertain you and somehow earn from

selling it to the public.

Lessons and discussions

Our Lady of Fatima University – Quezon City Campus is the place that

researchers have observed for the past weeks. One of the several places that suffers with

the issue regarding to cleanliness and discipline within every individual with the said

location. They checked out selected areas that had a lot of trash – specifically plastics.

Researchers had observed that simple rules such as “clean as you go” is being

ignored and instead, they put their trash around the university and some end up at

drainages. People continuously throw their wastes or just simply leave them after eating

or using them. The said university is no exception to its bad effects once it’s still not

given attention and solution. Trash disposal is also an issue of the school. After all the

research and observations, the researchers decided to make a move and act to this matter.

The problems like “Improper Waste Disposal” and “Air Pollution” are now gradually

evolving to their worst version and some actions might prevent it.

OBJECTIVES

I. To promote the practice of proper waste disposal

II. To develop discipline within every individuals.

III. To prevent the severe damaging effects of improper waste disposal and air

pollution.

IV. Aims for the improvement of the community and its people.
The Process

I. Planning. The researchers did some brainstorming before coming up to the idea.

They brought up a lot of issues that the environment is facing at this current stage of life.

Issues were measured: how big is its impact to both humans and the community; how

possible is it for them to achieve a certain goal related to the topic and; what actions will

be essential in making a project successful.

II. Collection of Trash. They came up with the thought of starting on collecting

garbage on different stalls around the campus. This will be a good start, knowing that

these stalls are the top contributor of wastes: biodegradable & non-biodegradable. Before

doing such actions, they mindfully ask for permissions first to the stall owners and its

employees so they’ll be aware of the project that researchers are conducting. It took them

days for collecting trashes and they noticed that plastics are large in number and

considered as a threat to the community, the environment, and also for our health.

III. Selling. Aside from the biodegradables that were buried beneath the ground,

which serve as a fertilizer, the collected trash, specifically non-biodegradable ones, were

sold to a certain junk shop and somewhat help the researchers gain money. The money

was used to purchase different seeds.

IV. Buying of Seeds. . The seeds will now then become beneficial when planted to

places around the campus with low vegetation. Vegetable seeds are planted for the people

who stay on the sidewalks and struggle with life. Trees that has been planted will be a big

help for the environment to enable people to be more productive and healthy.
Type of waste disposal performed

Composting

This method is useful for the disposal of biodegradable waste. Here, it can be allowed to

decompose after which the garbage will convert into useful manure. This is known as

composting

Advantages

I. Reduces environmental pollution.

There are things that cause pollution in an unintentional way so having this project will

lessen the contribution of people into making pollution. It also prevents the community

from experiencing the bad effects such as floods.

II. Keeps the environment clean and fresh.

There will be a peace and calming place the students can study, socialize with friends and

have fun; allowing people to become more productive day by day.

III. Improves health.

Proper waste disposal also make the people go disease-free as all the students’ waste are

properly disposed and taken care of.

Disadvantages

I. It takes time. The project is very sensitive to work with; especially it is the

environment that is at stake. Researchers had set schedules of when to perform a move. It

takes several days and weeks in collecting garbage until they reach the enough amounts

for them to earn their targeted profit to buy seeds. As well as the time spent for urban

gardening.

II. It requires effort. In order to create a progress, an action should be made

accurately and wisely. It will become hassle when no one had the initiative to do such

things: from collecting garbage up to the urban planting.

Cost of the project

The researchers decided to achieve their goals with less cost. Collection of trash

only costs some time and efforts. It’s not quite a big deal for they performed several

actions during their free time. The profit was used for buying seeds which were planted to

selected areas with low vegetation around the campus. Seeds only range around P 20 – P

70.

Limitations

All projects have their own limitations. It is difficult to create a progress

especially there are several factors involved. Every action was made wisely. An example

is the part where researchers had to ask permissions to stall owners and educate them
regarding the said issue and the project itself. The time is quite limited since every

member of the team has different schedule. Urban gardening was also a part of the

project and it doesn’t stop to the time the seeds were planted. The seeds were observed

for any progress and development. Another thing is that not all junk shops accept all

types of plastics. Most of the time, they only choose plastic bottles, cans, and cups,

making it harder to earn profit for the seeds. But still, the researchers manage to

overcome all the limitations they have in order to perform a successful project.
Conclusion

Earth's stability is at stake not just for animals or humans but for the environment

as well. The busier people get, the more they forget to be responsible for every actions

they make. People forget to make it as a habit to take care of the Earth.

The question is, “Is it too late to save Earth?” It is actually possible to happen.

Knowing that Earth naturally restores to its original state, with the help of humans, it will

definitely get better. It’s just that moderation to things is a must. Improper waste disposal

may seem like a small problem to other people but small negative actions affect a lot of

humans by bringing diseases and other illnesses. Discipline is a requirement in order for

us to solve the drastic changes in the environment.

Having awareness and discipline for the environment can make a difference. Bins

have been useful in lessening the problem; as well as the campaign which spreads

awareness to the students and the vendors around the campus regarding to its essence to

every individual. Seeds that have been planted were continuously growing which is a

good sign and progress.

With the perseverance and the passion to make things better, a simple project like

this will be attainable and successful. Try reflecting to yourself now by asking how well

you are treating the environment lately.
