DESIGN OF LIMIT METERS:

 TOLERANCE AND FIT OF THE LIMITED GAUGE
Limit gauges like any job require a manufacturing tolerance, and gauge size is
theoretically determined by Taylor's design principle

Logically, the manufacturing tolerance (gauge tolerance) should be kept as small

as possible, so that a large proportion of the working tolerance is still available to
manufacture a component. However, this increases the cost of the indicator.

There is no universally accepted rule for the amount of gauge tolerance, but it is
decided based on the working tolerance.

However, the 10% rule applies to find the amount of gauge tolerance. In
accordance with this rule; Limit gauges are made 10 times more accurate than the
tolerance they are supposed to control. It means that the tolerance on each
indicator, whether GO or NOT-Go, is 1/10 of the working tolerance. For example,
if the working tolerance is 100 units, the manufacturing meter tolerance will
become 10 units.

Gauges that have a gauge tolerance of 10% of working tolerance are known as
"working gauges" and are used by the operator to monitor dimensions in the
shop.

Two basic systems are used for assigning gauge tolerance around the nominal
size.

a) Unilateral system: In the unilateral system, the gauge tolerance zone is

completely in the working tolerance zone

b) Bilateral system: In the bilateral system, the gauge tolerance zones are
divided by the working tolerance zone

 WEAR ALLOWANCE:
Meter measurement surfaces, although hard and lapped, but wear out with time
in use. The GO indicator wears more than the NOT-GO indicator because the GO
indicator rubs against the surface to be calibrated when it goes into a hole. In this
condition, they lose their initial size and are no longer useful.

Therefore, to overcome this difficulty, a special metal tolerance, known as wear

tolerance, is added to the nominal diameter of a plug gauge and subtracted from
that of a ring gauge. The wear tolerance is applied to the nominal gauge diameter
before applying the gauge tolerance.

The wear tolerance should be kept as small as possible. Wear tolerance is

generally taken as 5% of work tolerance. This wear tolerance generally applies
only to the GO gauge.
