Abstract

The article I explored was retrieved from Edutopia and will discuss using UDL

(Universal Design Strategies) in teaching to ensure teachers make adaptations for all student

populations. I will explain how these strategies are helpful and describe how I will use them in

the classroom.

In the classroom we have diverse population of students. In a tradition learning

environment student were expected to adapt to the curriculum. Let face it this was an idea that

just does not work. Every child in unique. They possess different strengths and learn differently.

Therefore, it is crucial for teacher to us strategies in the classroom that support all learners. In her

article “ Ensuring that Instructions is Inclusive for Diverse Learner”, Nina Parish describes

different ways teachers can adapt lesson to help all student populations

The first idea she presents discusses teaching content in different ways. According to

Parish (2019), in a traditional classroom, planning for the lesson is done with the “typical”

student in mind. Often, there is one way for all students to learn the material, such as a lecture or

a slide presentation. Instead she proposes that teachers create lesson with all students in mind.

This can be done by surveying students to find what knowledge they already bring to the table.

Listening to a lesson student are already are familiar with might be frustrating and decrease

engagement from this population of students. Have a better idea of what student know will help

the teacher scaffold instruction more effectively for all learners.

The next idea she examines is providing choice for students to uphold student

engagement. Parish (2019) writes for guided practice students could decide whether to answer

questions independently and receive feedback, play a game, do a role play, or practice in a group.

To demonstrate their understanding of a concept, they could decide whether to create a poster or

construct a model, write a paper, make a video or podcast, or do a presentation. Providing choice

for students allow them to present their knowledge in a way that is most meaningful to them.

Assuming all students could write a paper or solve fifteen problem to explain what they know is

farfetched. Because student learn and communicate their thinking different students should be

given and opportunity to show what they knowledge in their own way.

The last idea presented is ensuring that teachers make adaptions for more than their IEP

or 504 student population. For these groups of students, a group of educators have designed a

detailed plan to support students. Although the rest of the population does not have such a plan

depicted it is important not to forget about them. Parish (2019) suggests assistive technology can

support more than your special needs population. Allowing students to use text to speech could

also benefit other students. Having notes available can also for students who are absent or have

trouble following allow with a lesson can also benefit students.

As teachers we need to provide instruction that is student centered. Implementing UDL

strategies in our lesson will ensure all students are supported.
