LEE NEWMAN

The web site was locked and they were no able to sell
their product to the final users. Reviewing SQL Server
we can determine that we are manipulating a very big
amount of data, big database with lots of tables, views,
stored procedures, triggers, and etcetera. Because of
unknown of applications source code that uses the SQL
Server database, it’s hard to expose a correct diagnose,
and the problem could come from the applications side,
the bandwidth, or from DB as a hidden problem.
Practically, the server configuration has NOT been
configured according to best practices, and we could
talk with Lee Newman to determine if changing some
parameters the server could work better and adding
more Hardware.

CORVEL INSURANCE
Corvel has been experiencing chronic performance problems with Database processes
and I performed an analysis of the database parameters, hardware and t-SQL procedures.
There are several stages that should be performed.
WHAT WE DID?
The first step was to review existing data that has been collected by the client, as well as
a basic review of the server configuration to confirm that the server has been configured
according to best practices, then review the hardware, and take a look at the T-SQL
source code. I ran the profiler and I took notes about dirty code, etc. Finally I configured
the server according to best practices, I added memory to the server and I change some
stored procedures source code , for example, by changing cursor with loops and
improving select clauses. I deleted Logs and I created plans to apply periodically
improvements.
