COMPETENCY FIVE ARTIFACT PAPER 2

A recent Netflix original has a sparked a great deal of attention to the topic of child abuse.

Gabriel Fernandez was brutally murdered on May 24, 2013 at the hands of his mother and her

boyfriend in a case that would forever impact the country. The 8-year-old boy died of his injuries

in a nearby hospital after suffering abuse for months at their hands.  The boy’s injuries included a

cracked skull, shattered ribs, severe burns and BB pellets buried in his body (Myers, 2018). Like

Gabriel many children are victims of child abuse daily at the hands of their parents. Children like

Gabriel lack the proper resources to be able to safely leave their homes and grow up in a warm

and loving environment. The tragic fate of Gabriel should not be the same for all children that

are victims of child abuse. It is evident that an organization has to exists which helps children

who are victims of child abuse get the protection and help they need.

Creating an organization that assists children that are victims of child abuse is essential to

ensuring the health and future of these children. It is important to note that there are other

organizations that have emerged over the years to help women that are victims of domestic

violence. However, many of these organizations focus solely on the needs of the women that are

exposed to violence, forgetting the children that are direct victims of child abuse. Not to mention,

no attention is placed on the fact that many times women are the main perpetrators of violence

and abuse towards their children. The goals of the non-for-profit organization “Hope House”

would be to:

-provide housing to children that have experienced abuse

- provide food and clothing to children that have experienced abuse

-provide health services to children that have experienced abuse

-provide children with adequate educational needs

-provide children with emotional and developmental support

-provide resources to link them children with foster homes

The right organization under the right leadership would focus on creating an organization

specifically devoted to reaching these goals and helping children that have been victims of abuse.

The POLC management function is vital in creating a successful non for-profit

organization. The acronym POLC is as follows:

P- Planning

O-Organizing

L-Leading

C-Controlling (Scott, 2012)

Planning would be beneficial to the organization, because it prepares all management and

employees with a knowledge base of what to expect and what the organization will eventually

face. Adequate planning considers factors such as economic conditions, competition and

customers. However, for this non for-profit organization the most important things to consider

are funding, staff support and needs of customers. Managers and leaders need to have a capacity

to predict which is a huge setback of POLC, because conditions can always change.

Organizing is a vital function because it lays down a foundation for which to build the

company goals on. The right organizational structure can ensure the long-term success of the

organization. For example, when a leader or manager is not present the right organizational

structure will still function effectively. When the wrong organizational structure and organizing

is present within an organization, goals cannot be attained in a timely and efficient manner or at

all.

Effective leading is crucial to ensuring the long terms success of the organization.

Effective leaders are those that inspire their employees and lead by example. Most importantly
COMPETENCY FIVE ARTIFACT PAPER 4

the right kind of leader inspires followers to work hard towards attaining the common goals of

the organization. It is important to note that empowering employees is crucial to leading, because

a leader cannot always be around or supervising employees. The right leader is confident in the

capabilities that his staff possesses. One drawback of leading is that one leadership style does not

always work with all members of the organization or for every situation. Therefore, leaders

should learn to be versatile in terms of their leadership styles.

The last function involves control. Control ensures that the organization is working

towards and achieving its delineated goals as expected. In order to execute control effectively, a

measure should be utilized to determine the overall success of the organization thus far.

Accountability should also be established within the organization in order to determine where

action needs to be taken and improvements need to be made. The non for profit will be

successful if it manages to transition 100 child abuse victims into foster homes in its first year.

Helping the victims of child abuse is a cause that is near and dear to me. I cannot imagine the

heartache and disparity that the children of child abuse feel. My plans are to successfully create and lead a

non-for-profit organization that helps children that are victims of child abuse get the services, help, love

and support they need.
